Imagine Tom Seaver as a 6 inning once/week starter.

Not the 60's or 70's, but yes.

Yes, but there's something very strange about the steroid era. In spite of all that offense, you also had a large group of dominating Hall of Fame pitchers- Johnson, Maddux, Pedro, Clemens, etc.

Steroids/conditioning can't improve eye-hand coordination or contact skills. These pitchers were talking about just had filthy stuff

I'm not sure if steroids have much effect on hitting at all. When I use the term "steroid era" I mean it as the time span between the early 90s to the mid 2000s when offense was dominating in a way that it hadn't since the 30s. Whether that was because of smaller ballparks, PEDs, juiced balls, or some combination thereof doesn't really matter. The fact is a handful of guys were dominating in nearly the same way pitchers did in the low offense 60s.

That's the official rule. But there has historically been a lot of manipulation of mound heights. In the 60s the Dodgers were well known for raising the mound well beyond the rule. Also, a trick that has been used by certain teams is to put huge mounds in the visitor's bullpen so when they walk out to the field, suddenly it's as if they are throwing out of a hole.

The last change to the pitchers mound was in 1969. 10 inches.

You said that already. What you can't seem to grasp is that for me, talking baseball with you, would be like a three year old trying to talk about HVAC systems with you. So I'm just going to ignore your input on the subject and continue to talk to those who have some idea about the subject.

I think the 90's had the perfect storm of guys who were taught how to attack batters from a young age, but before they were expected to practice until their elbows exploded. Just advanced enough to make an already supremely talented arm basically unhittable, but not to the point where kids playing sports was a full time job. Kerry Wood (I still maintain is the greatest pitcher ever born) marks the end of this era.

There's a lot of evidence to suggest that's the case. Unless you believe that everyone began taking them at precisely the same time.

Marichal was better than Gibson, but neither one of them was ever as good as Kershaw has been since 2009. Yeah, they threw a lot more innings. I guess that's an argument in their favor. But they also threw off a towering mound which allowed them to command a curveball in a way that is impossible for most of today's pitchers.

But they also played before the baseball community, inexplicably, decided strikeouts were OK. The game is playing right into the hands of guys like Clayton Kershaw and Chris Sale and they're massacring opponents because of it. I'm still taking Gibson over Kershaw because Kershaw cant get any Cardinal batters out in the playoffs.

True. There is no shame in striking out anymore.

Jorr, you're just speculating and making things up and guessing and acting like it's cold hard facts.
The mound was 10 inches after 69 and since.
No towering mounds like you claimed. You said they persisted thru the 70s.
Two separate people tell you the last rule change was 69.
That's not enough though for you. No. There's secret mounds in the MLB.
We know grounds keepers might fuck with the mound here and there or grow the grass a couple feet longer on Ron ceys side of the field and what not but the "towering mounds" were lowered in 69.
Someday, please, for the love of god just admit it when you're wrong instead of making goofy childish claims and bullshit like you ALWAYS do.

Also, jorr, you have a very high opinion of your own baseball iq. It's amazing how people that don't agree with you are stupid and not worth of discussion. Very mature attitude to have about debate.

You don't know what you're talking about. Have you ever seen an umpire actually measure a mound? I know the ground rules of the game, dummy. I also know what the book strikezone is and I haven't seen it called in forty years.

Not "people". You.

Here's the patented Darkside Message Board methodology:

1) Make a cunty statement.
2) Act surprised when the guy it was directed at gets salty.
3) Repeat.

So is every mound is higher than 10 inches or just a few?

I'm telling you it was common practice in the 70s to build the mound higher for a curveball pitcher. A guy like Steve Stone needed every millimeter he could get. He'd tell you that himself.

You and I were having a real discussion. You disagreed in a normal way. I made my case, you made yours and neither of us was a rude little churl. That's a far cry from posting like a fucking asshole and then feigning surprise when the other guy gets chippy.

That's not what you said though. You didn't say a mound would be a bit higher here and there for a pitcher or two... you said:

Not a mound. Not Stone's mound. THE mound. IE all of them, or by rule. Which you were mistaken about. It's not a big deal dude.

Also, it's hard to sell "the mound was changed to 10 inches in 1969" as a cunty statement.

Give him time. Some day you'll say "How does a total number of games played equate to a shortstop's greatness" and it will be all downhill from there. Suddenly, you're a total moron who has probably never watched a baseball game before. Perhaps you'll question the philosophy that you should only score one more run than your opponent plans to in order to try to win a game. Then you're not worthy of his higher than average IQ.

Are you really such a fucking Caller Bob that you don't even know when you're being cunty?

Like the above. I never said that the total number of games played was any designation of greatness or anything even close to that. So why would you repeatedly suggest that I did? Unless you're trying to be cunty. Maybe you just can't help it.

Maybe it was someone else who said that Dunstons 1800 games played proved his greatness.
I thought that was you. If not, I apologize.

Again, I'm not going to explain the disappearance of the curveball and the rise of the slider and how those things relate to the height of the mound to you.

I've never once mentioned Shawon Dunston's "greatness". What I said was that a guy doesn't get to play in 1800 big league games by being bad at baseball. I suppose you can spin that into some type of outlandish remark if you want to be cunty about it.

Damn! I wish I knew how to set up one of those polls so people could cast their votes.
My poll would be for the "Best JORR derogatory name that he has used on page five of this thread."
I'd list "Dummy," "Rude little churl," "Fucking asshole," and "Fucking Caller Bob."
My personal favorite is "Rude little churl."
If someone can set this poll up for me, I'd be interested in watching the results.

So it was you. One of these days when I have time I'll go back and look for it because I'm pretty sure it wasn't "he's not bad at baseball" because I doubt anyone would have taken that as unusual. Something tells me you're walking back a statement by saying it like that.

Okay, guy. You are being hostile. You're saying I said things I never said. You're repeating a post like a smartass third grader. And now you're calling me low class. You're just a fucking douchebag. Why don't you just stop addressing me period and I'll do the same with you?

Dude, I said that if you're not the guy who said that Dunston was great because of 1800 games played then I apologize. You said it wasn't you. Or that you didn't say that so obviously I'm mistaken.
As far as other things you didn't say, I'm quoting you in this thread.
But I'm not calling you names or Caller Bob or douchebag so yeah, you're being hostile.
Take it easy man.
