Because I tend to stay the hell away from all TV that begins with "ESPN", maybe I haven't noticed before, but is the permanent strike zone box new this season? Whatever, it's annoying as shit.

I enjoyed the announcers too...great chemistry. Found myself laughing several times with Kruk and Shilling ribbing each other. The best was when they were discussing the possibility that Lester overdid it in warmups, and Kruk said he never went overboard in warmups...to which Shulman replied, "we would have guessed that."

Many that is true, but an incomplete statement.

The bald jokes were hysterical. Kruk chiding the announcer about sticking a light bulb in his mouth like Uncle Fester.

Matches,you are right on about Glanville. He is very baseball wise. The Cubs should have grabbed him and throw in a 3rd guy to crack jokes like Kruk or maybe even a non-sober Rick Sutcliffe or Mark Grace.

The Cubs have signed lefty James Russell, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports on Twitter. Russell was released by the Braves earlier this spring.

Of course, Russell spent much of last season (and all of his career before it) with Chicago. Dealt along with Emilio Bonifacio to Atlanta last summer in exchange for catcher Victor Caratini and cash, Russell put up good numbers down the stretch. He ended the year with a career-low 2.97 ERA over 57 2/3 innings between both clubs.

In spite of his solid results last year, a rough spring led to his departure from the Braves, who will be on the hook for about $600K of salary but were able to avoid paying Russell the full $2.4MM he had agreed upon to avoid arbitration. Because Chicago was able to land him with a minor league deal, Russell will represent a free roll for the team if and when he makes it onto the major league roster.

Lefty Joe Ortiz, who is on the 40-man roster and figured to challenge for a spot in the Cubs’ bullpen at some point this year, has been placed on the suspended list. No word yet on why, but I believe it would have been announced by MLB if this were a PED issue (and I know that in MLB, at least, players suspended for PEDs go on the “restricted” list, rather than the “suspended” list). So that’s not likely to be it. The Cubs did just sign lefty James Russell to a minor league deal, which makes you wonder whether they knew they were going to be without Ortiz for a while.
