Might be over.

The better bet would be over 100 errors.

The Cubs were rung up 12 times tonight. The first of many double digit strikeout games.

Not a bad game. Lester was underwhelming but was okay and the bullpen looked good. Too many scorers left in scoring position but Carpenter made some great pitches in a huge strike zone to get out of it, not to mention he hasn't given up a run vs the Cubs in 17 years. Let's take the next one and go .500 until Bryant gets here and then go from there.

Long season but some of the sloppy fielding was disturbing.

I'm still predicting big things from Coghlin and Soler.

That guy Coke did a fantastic job coming in with 2 men on and
striking out 2 hitters.

A rookie has a giant sign across from Wrigley? "Worth the wait"...wow

I enjoyed the cajoling of the 3 man booth on ESPN

Your hair is outta control

Bad fielding is common in for a lot of teams in April. But I think this could be a concern long term for the Cubs

Dating back to 2012, the Chicago Cubs are 0 for their last 34 with runners in scoring position on opening day. Were 0 for 13 Sunday night.

Because I tend to stay the hell away from all TV that begins with "ESPN", maybe I haven't noticed before, but is the permanent strike zone box new this season? Whatever, it's annoying as shit.

Yes. It was used in Spring Training and they decided to keep it.

I enjoyed the announcers too...great chemistry. Found myself laughing several times with Kruk and Shilling ribbing each other. The best was when they were discussing the possibility that Lester overdid it in warmups, and Kruk said he never went overboard in warmups...to which Shulman replied, "we would have guessed that."

Cubs are still high on power rankings released after last night's game.

#13 on BR
#16 on NESN
#13 on CBS
#20 on ESPN (ESPN don't know shite about poop)

The bald jokes were hysterical. Kruk chiding the announcer about sticking a light bulb in his mouth like Uncle Fester.

Unfortunately for Cub fans, back to Kasper & DeShaies. I don't hate them but they are just very vanilla.

Kasper became a little unlikable over the past few years by becoming very Cubs apologist-y. Hopefully a better team will make me like him as I once did.

I don't mind Kasper, but him and DeShaies is not a good combo. Lots of bad comedy. Not many things worse in my world than bad comedy. Also, there seems to be some awkward prodding at times to just to get a conversation going. I wish they would've hired Doug Glanville.

Yep.

It started for me when he suggested that Kerry Wood's number be retired. It's pretty obvious he is not going to stray from the company line. Kind of like the Cubs version of Zach Zaidman.

Matches, you are right on about Glanville. He is very baseball wise. The Cubs should have grabbed him and throw in a 3rd guy to crack jokes like Kruk or maybe even a non-sober Rick Sutcliffe or Mark Grace.

Sutcliffe yes, Grace I gotta disagree. I hope Grace has his issues under control, but until he does, he's a danger to society. Beyond that, I've never found him entertaining.

For as much as I like Castro, I'd do the last proposal in an instant.

I think you would have to give some serious consideration to the 1st one as well. #2 does not excite me as much.

The Cubs have signed lefty James Russell, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports on Twitter. Russell was released by the Braves earlier this spring.

Of course, Russell spent much of last season (and all of his career before it) with Chicago. Dealt along with Emilio Bonifacio to Atlanta last summer in exchange for catcher Victor Caratini and cash, Russell put up good numbers down the stretch. He ended the year with a career-low 2.97 ERA over 57 2/3 innings between both clubs.

In spite of his solid results last year, a rough spring led to his departure from the Braves, who will be on the hook for about $600K of salary but were able to avoid paying Russell the full $2.4MM he had agreed upon to avoid arbitration. Because Chicago was able to land him with a minor league deal, Russell will represent a free roll for the team if and when he makes it onto the major league roster.

From BleacherNation:

Quote:
Lefty Joe Ortiz, who is on the 40-man roster and figured to challenge for a spot in the Cubs’ bullpen at some point this year, has been placed on the suspended list. No word yet on why, but I believe it would have been announced by MLB if this were a PED issue (and I know that in MLB, at least, players suspended for PEDs go on the “restricted” list, rather than the “suspended” list). So that’s not likely to be it. The Cubs did just sign lefty James Russell to a minor league deal, which makes you wonder whether they knew they were going to be without Ortiz for a while.
