First Cubs game of the year today for myself. Diva Lester was given an extra day of rest so no excuses for the cat tonight.

Lester will barely be a .500 pitcher for the Cubs and will be worse every year

Do you have any basis for this or just your gut feeling?

Not that there's anything wrong with a gut feeling.

Im interested to see how he does with runners on base.

Just a gut feeling. I understand he was arguably the biggest name out there I just get the feeling it was more of a "we better make a splash" move rather than thinking he was going to be good the next 6 years. Lets face it, he better justify the contract the first couple years cuz its going to get ugly fast down the road.

Im hoping he's as good as Ted Lilly was (in the regular season)

Lester has a better outing and Rizzo drives in 2.

4-2 Cubs

Well for his talent and size of contract Id be hoping for more than that but Lilly was really good for them no doubt.

44 wins over 3 years would be fine.

Well if we're basing it on 15 wins being the new 20 , I guess that'd be ok.

so jon lester is the russian mail order bride of "high-end" FA pitching?

but hey i get it.... after the clever edwin jackson move and the great tanaka fake-out, they gotta start to get that whole LET'S GO mantra going and sell a lot of shit to the IMUs of the world.

I know Kirk is in full anti-Rizzo mode but I think he'll be alright. My bigger concern is Castro. Wish they'd put him in the 2 hole and ask him to be a singles hitter and let Soler bat clean up until Bryant gets here.

Rizzo is fine. He will always be a little frustrating a la Joey Votto

Castro will also be fine. If Coughlynn and Fowler produce the lineup will be real good.

And the bullpen looks good. Things are actually looking prettay good

Jason Marquise obviously made a pact with the devil. That guy seemed done a decade ago.

I have to think you want your highest paid pitcher to be better than Ted Lilly. Lilly was just a guy. He was never a front of the rotation ace. Yeah, he put up some good records those three Cub seasons. But if ever there was a guy who benefited from being on good teams it was Ted Lilly.

Lilly had a way of stopping losing streaks. Always liked him. Consistent kind of guy.
Other than the glove throw.

Are you telling Cub fans to raise their expectations? :)

Lilly was really good during the regular season. If Lester averages 15 wins per year that will be fine.

and he limited baserunners well

Walks & Hits per IP s c a p y
2007 NL 1.140 (4th)
2009 NL 1.056 (5th)
2010 NL 1.079 (4th)
2011 NL 1.157 (9th)

Rizzo's zone was extremely high and low yesterday. A bunch of those called strikes were clearly balls.

The thing that tickled me from the original post was seeing Jason Marquis is still in a starting rotation.

Settled down nicely after the 1st.

Minus throwing a pickoff attempt into Section 36.

So the media got him to throw to first and it went into the stands?

No. Right field. Soler got the runner at 3rd.

I exaggerated the errant pickoff attempt. It was one of the worst I've seen though. And Soler did gun him down with a laser.

Not good for Lester. I think he'll come around like he always has though

I like the offense answering both times
