He did jumping events, and only excelled in the conference championships. His 100 yard dash was 1.5 seconds slower than the high school record holder.

Akeem was a great athlete but he really was only 6'9. If you match him up against other six nine guys he doesn't look all that impressive. Russell was only 6'9 also. Wilt was 7 feet and 300 pounds doing things guys that guys his size couldn't.
There are pictures of Hakeem only being a little shorter than Shaq.

Its common knowledge that Shaq towered over Hakeem during the finals.

Shaq played bigger than him for sure. Shaq played bigger than just about everyone.

The highest estimate of Hakeem's height is 6'10 but most that ever remember had him at 6'9. Some even as short as 6'8. He was never as tall as his listed height of 7'0. There are very few guys in the NBA ever that can match Wilt athletically. When you combine size, strength, speed, and leaping ability, the guy was a freak of nature. I pulled up an interview with he and Bill Russell where Russell admitted that Wilt did not try and play the power game as much for fear that he may hurt someone. He was much more chiseled than Shaq even when you factor in modern training methods. Look at old tapes of Wilt and compare them with Shaq. It's no comparison

Among other things.

How tall were the Vikings? Not the NFL team. I have heard

http://listverse.com/2009/04/21/top-10- ... e-vikings/

So 5'7". Not very intimidating IMHO. If that is accurate or not I don't know. We have way better nutrition these days though so I buy into that.

Hakeem was so smooth. Wilt though would have killed Shaq. He was likely physically stronger than Shaq setting the bench press record in his 50's at UCLA. He had more wind than Shaq. Size Shaq would have worn him down a bit and Shaq in shape had an amazing first step and nose for the ball. Wilt always wins though and Hakeem is my favorite of all time.

He averaged 29 points against him over about 150 games. What did you want him to do, sell beer too?

Is that accurate?

That is only 87 games, but that means that in the other 63 games Wilt would have had to average about 40 ppg against Russell.

Still though, what you see there is not dominant over that time period.

Well, considering he averaged 50 over an entire season once, I don't think it's a stretch. I have to question Basketball Reference for having only 87 games. I'm sure they faced each other about 150 times.

Anyway, I was struck by your statement that Wilt "wasn't even dominant over Bill Russell". Never mind the fact that he was, Russell was possibly the best post defender of all time.

Other sources that don't actually post the game scores indicate he got about 29 points a game.

I only bring it up because long time guy thinks that Wilt would dominate Shaq. Wilt wasn't even dominant against a player from that era. I think a guy who was bigger and stronger than both of them could hold his own too.

I saw Kareem at the very end, so Hakeem was and is the best center I ever saw play. The guy could post up, had range and was a terrific defensive player.

You keep saying that as if it was Wilt, Russell, and a bunch of 6'1" white guys jumping center. That seems to be a popular idea among your demographic. I don't really care if you want to believe that, but to guys who really know the game it sounds silly.

Let's not talk about Wilt and Russell, arguably two of the top five of all-time. Let's take a guy like Bob Lanier who is largely forgotten. I want you to make a case that Chris Bosh (likely Hall of Famer) or Dwight Howard is better than he was.

That wouldn't be an accurate way to characterize my thoughts.

I'm just talking about Shaq being dominated by Wilt. Shaq was bigger than Russell and Wilt couldn't dominate him. Why would he be able to dominate a guy who is bigger and stronger?

Wilt would do well against Shaq too but to say that anyone could dominate Shaq is just crazy talk. The closest Shaq ever got to being dominated was Hakeem and Shaq still put up pretty good numbers.

I saw Luc Longley play stout defense and frustrate Shaq. Rodman was also able to play him one on one. I'm not trying to knock Shaq, the guy was a great player, but there were times he could be neutralized.

You didn't watch I Hate Christian Laettner, did you? Besides that, you're putting too much stock in size. Wes Unseld was about 6'6" and he defended Hall of Fame players 6 inches taller often and quite successfully.

I didn't, but I'm not talking about college Shaq either. I only care about the track and field accomplishments of Shaq in college.

I never used the term dominate. that's a misquote. What I stated is that he was a better athlete than Shaq. Wilt Chamberlain was a tremendous athlete. I used him to demonstrate that this notion of today's athlete being far superior is often overused. There were tremendous athletes in every era. Also today's athlete appears to break down physically far too much also. You also have guys that sit out games for rest that is unheard of. How superior are they really if they have to do that. I will state that there appears to be fewer overweight NBA players in today's game. That is one of the noticeable differences.

You didn't say it specifically. That was someone else. My mistake.

What I saw on the tapes indicated that Shaq would be just fine with Wilt.

For sure, we should do that. I always mean to hit up spmack to meet me at Hawthorne or Maywood. Arlington Park is too civilized. It's almost like it's not a real racetrack. It would be good to see an actual live horse in person once in awhile. I've gotten lazy in going to the OTB and I think spmack is one of those modern ADW bettors.

I'll be at the Illinois Derby tomorrow in the Gold Cup Room. Hang out with a few Twitter buddies. Trying to build a serious pot up so I can go crazy on Ky Derby Day.
