On the comic book side of things, Herb Trimpe passed on Monday. He worked at Marvel extensively as an artist, from the late 1960s thru the 90s. Best known for his work on the Hulk, Defenders, Godzilla, Shogun Warriors. This guy is the co-creator of Wolverine, drawing his first appearance in Hulk 181.

Marvels in the 70s relied on a small list of stalwarts whose work appeared in virtually every title: John and Sal Buscema, Gene Colan, Don Heck, and Herb. John Romita and Gil Kane did a lion's share of the covers. Of these Sal Buscema and John Romita are still with us.

Trimpe wrote an interesting article for the NY Times about how Marvel terminated his contract in the 90s, forcing him to get qualified as a high school art teacher. He was one of the ministers who worked with the salvagers at the 911 WTC disaster area (and wrote a book on the experience.)

You know what my beef with Wolverine is? When he first appeared he wasn't a mutant. They only made him a mutant when the new X-Men appeared in Giant Size X-Men #1. I guess they wanted an established character in there.

Well, also, they wanted "international characters." And they've already established Wolverine's Canadian. And Marvel, then as now, likes to reuse their characters.

In Wolverine's case, its the retro continuity that bugs me. So, they've retro'ed that he's 100+ years old, a mutant, a spy, a ninja (!!), who speaks fluent Japanese, a bezerker, healing factor, etc., etc., etc. Pretty soon he gets heat vision, a cape, raised by adopted parents in Iowa, and is a reporter...

I find it kind of funny that Wolverine seems to be the lead dog for the Marvel movie franchise. I always considered him a minor character. I guess he was the mouthy punk in the new X-Men. This is a school, bitch. Shut the fuck up and let Charles Xavier teach your dumb ass about life as a mutie!

The original Uncanny X-Men was always one of my favorite titles, although I'm pretty sure it wasn't really popular in its time. It was a redheaded stepbrother to The Avengers. I was surprised at how popular the movies were and that Marvel led with them. Now that The Avengers are on the big screen order has returned.

He became more of major character following Chris Claremont/John Byrne's run. Byrne set him up as a maniacal mass-killer, and that was enough for the fanboys. But prior to Giant-Sized #1, X-Men were always a tough sell. The original characters were frankly boring. Even after passes by then-white hot artists (Adams & Steranko) didn't help sales enough.

Herb also worked on weird shit like Killraven & Son of Satan. If you followed Marvel in the early 70s, they were expanding their line, and artists would pop up virtually in any/every title. It was great if you liked seeing different artists' takes on the characters, virtually, every month.

True story. One night after drinking and getting high, three friends and I had a huge argument that nearly resulted in blows over whether the proper pronunciation was Mag-neet-o or Mag-net-o. The guy had magnetic powers. It only makes sense that his name was Mag-net-o.

Loved Steranko's work on Nick Fury.

Steranko did some nice work. I just bought this comic recently that he did the cover on. One of the my favorite covers of all time.
