Is Pat Hughes out today, or is this just for his inning off thing?

His off inning. Lot of scoring and it was brutal to listen to Coomer try and keep up.

He blew the audition when he did the whole inning as Les Grobstein.

Why, again, does Hughes do this? I think it was discussed before but I don't remember. Do any other play-by-play guys need a break while working for 3 consecutive hours 162 days out of the year?

I don't recall any local NBA or NFL guys not being able to work an entire game.

Uecker only works six innings out of nine (and has as long as I can remember; Pat Hughes got his start as Ueck's backup), but he calls the game solo. Farmer doesn't do play-by-play all nine innings, but he does color for the other three. Of course, you could argue Farmio doesn't do play-by-play for any innings. Marty Brennaman takes an inning or two off, one of which is Jeff Brantley doing pxp solo. I think the Randazzler is now doing the innings Howie Rose doesn't do.

I remember Pat used to take either the top or bottom of the 8th off and hand it over to Andy Masur, then after Masur left for San Diego (where he did a couple innings a game for Jerry Coleman I think?), he started taking the whole 5th inning off and that Cory Provus guy would do play-by-play. He wasn't very good at all, yet he somehow moved up to backing up Uecker and then doing full-time pxp for the Twins.

Why do they do that, though? It's not like they're signing for 3 hours. Is it rougher on the pipes than I think it is?

Because they can, I guess. There's a long tradition of trading off radio play-by-play in baseball. In the Brooklyn days, Vin Scully only called the odd-numbered innings. Nobody romanticizes Jerry Doggett.

Sorry. If there's one thing I hate, it's stepping on somebody's comedy bits.
