1. He didn't have a full spring training
2. He's trying to live up to that MONSTER contract
3. He's in a new league
4. He's on a new team
5. He warms up with the weather
6. He always starts out slow at a new level then "figures it out"

I don't have an excuse, but he's better than he's pitching.

Not giving up on Lester, but not blowing smoke either. he has been a #3 at best. No excuses...

I think most cub fans feel that he's looked bad...he should improve ...we will see. He's pitched poorly n that is clear.

He was better today but not worthy of all the hype. I had my doubts about this signing. Time will tell. Deserved a better fate today but for Schlitter. Maddon seems to like this shithead for some odd reason.

He is trying to take up the slack for Frank being gone.

Yet he really sucks at it.

Yippers!

Heard somewhere that Lester didn't throw over to 1st base after April 15th last season?

If you had said Lester's going to shit the bed first 3 starts, you wouldn't have expected Cubs to be competing for 1st in the division. Silver lining, of sorts. Image

"Of sorts" I agree, but one more poor outing and I raise the level to CONCERN...

I wouldn't be concerned if it weren't for the dead arm in spring training. Three starts is not a big deal. Even a month full of bad starts isn't that big of a deal.

Big deal comes after level of concern

Too many day games at Wrigley. He's used to pitching night games like the rest of the league.

filed under AWESOME.....Robin Ventura

At this point I think Robin is done. In any business you cant come in as the nice guy, who is just relaxed and mellow, then when it goes bad, you become the hardass...and the Sox need the hardass right now. Not saying you need to be a dick from day 1, but come in and demand things be done right, gain respect of those who work under you and I dont think he has that. They look at him as an equal and it just doesnt work. You are the manager of the team, the real estate office, the sales divsion, the stock brokerage....your job is to make others produce and making everyone feel complacent doesnt make them better.

It's not like managers are simply "good" or "bad". When Ventura came in he was the right kind of guy after the crazy Guillen circus and he almost got there with an inferior team. But his calmness/complacency hasn't helped them since.

Lester was a bad acquisition and showed a surprising lack of regard for their own plan on the part of Theo and Jed.

This isn't on the level of the E-Jax acquisition, but it's still a poor choice for a team that can't really contend properly till 2016 and won't be king of the division till probably 2017.

And yes I said it was a bad pickup from day one.

Wait, you wanted them to tank another season Rogue?

Cause that is included in C of Fools second part there.

to be fair, tanking is not the exact opposite of trying to win NOW. I'd have liked them to be where ever they found their level playing prospects and not putting pressure on for this season. Acquiring Lester also led to Ross, another galling pickup who they do not need.

Yeah I think throwing away 150 million on this guy when the Cubs are at least a year away wasn't very smart. He's not going to get better as he gets older. Again, it strikes more more of a we better make a splash now move rather than based on how he's actually expected to pitch in the next few years.

Many have postulated that they targeted Lester because he's a finesse guy, more than a power pitcher. They tend to age better than power guys.

So you would have not wanted Montero, Hammel or Lester?

I see him as the opposite. A fading power pitcher who will now have to it his spots to be effective. I don't see that getting better as he ages and his fastball tops at 91
