Grace has to be happy.

Cuz after Bryant has his HOF career the Cubs will say, what the hell? We'll retire it for Bryant and Grace just like they did #31 for Fergie and Maddux. Why not? What's the harm of flying a Grace/Bryant flag since your gonna kill the number anyway.

But that's gonna be 20 years from now. Don't know if Grace's liver will allow him to be around to see it.

I saw #17 on first the other day and for a second I thought it was Grace. Have to get used to Bryant wearing that number.

One should not sweat the small stuff. BUT....I "hated" Mark Grace....and then to see Bryant have his number??? Ugh. I honestly hope it changes at some point. Oh well...

I'm sure I'll get beaten up for this, but put me on the short list of people that think Grace was a great player, but not great enough to have his number retired.

Grace was a very good player, but he was and is over-loved by some in Cubdom. I know they had to do it, but in hindsight they traded the wrong 1st basemen to Texas for Mitch Williams, Paul Kilgus, and Curtis Wilkerson. And I know one could argue that Palmerio might never have discovered the workout program here that he did in Arlington, but I still would have rather had him than Grace. (And I don't hate Grace)

You must have missed Cindy Sandberg's part of that deal.

I know about it and I understand why they had to but as fan, I still wanted Palmerio.

First number 34, now number 17. Theo "Boston George" Epstein has no respect for the Cub fan and his love of history. When he finishes pissing all over your traditions he will skulk out of town in a gorilla suit and take a job running the Dodgers or Padres or Rockies.

Typical Cubs though. We keep the all American nice guy singles hitter and give up the guy with 500 home runs who did roids.

I don't get what you're saying. They shouldn't give out Grace's or Wood's numbers even though they're not worthy of having them retired?

Or maybe your being sarcastic. I can't tell.

Not worthy? WHAT?????? Wood pitched the best game in history! Grace had the most hits in the 90s!

Well at least the White Sox are saving #16 for Kenny... Sox traditions

How many rings will Theo leave with?

#17 isn't a cool number for a slugger. How many guys with 500 HRs wore that number? Off the top of my head, none. How many guys with 400 HRs wore it? Can't think of any.

I guess he can be the first and make it a cool number for sluggers.

Then again, 14 isn't a cool number and Konerko and Banks made it cool.

I hope Jim Hendry gets the Red Sox GM job and hands out Papi's number 34 to some bum pitcher and allows a utility infielder to wear Schilling "bloody" sock.

I think the knock on Grace was he smoked and drank instead of caring about baseball more. Plus he banged every blonde at the Wrigley bars. That life style takes a lot out of you. Yeah, he can hit. He was gonna single and double you to death and get his .300 average. But if he didn't smoke 2 packs a day and drink 15 beers every night, he could have been better.

I don't think they traded the wrong 1st basemen. Palmerio went on to do steroids after the Cubs traded him. How were the Cubs to konw that in 1988? If Grace did roids he would have been better than Palmerio.

Yea, but he did everything else well. I was a big fan. I would like to see him replace either Coomer or Deshais in the booth.

The next guy in the booth for the Cubs should be Ryan Dempster.

I love when JORR tries to piss all over the Cubs fire and passion....but I think the fire is getting too big and JORR is running out of piss.

Wood is also not worthy of retiring the number.

Damn, JORR...you want to retire jerseys like Hendry wanted to hand-out no trade clauses

The only reason Demlster should be in the booth is if someone's going to push him out the window.

Yeah, just sucks that he played 1b. When Sandberg hit 40 it didnt have the same impact because they had a second baseman's numbers at first

I like him as a commentator and party animal.

Dempster would still be better than JD. He seems baseball smart, and he and Len would probably work together well.

Offer Plesac the world.
