...People used to play music in the background of their outgoing voicemail message?

And some assholes would actually let the song play for like 30 seconds after talking?

Nope. I remember more of attempt for that goofy answering message, or the "Hello.....hello.......Aha , I am not here"

Mine was "You know what to do.....<beep>"

I had David Lee Roth with the "Helloooo Baabeee" followed by my message. My roommate used to spaz out about it because his mother did not like it. The guy was from south florida and had nothing but heavy long sleeve shirts and jeans in his wardrobe. He was pale as a ghost. The guy destroyed my game freshman year.

The best part, was when the audio cut in and out, or they didn't start/stop recording at the right time.

We have a guy at work whose name rhymes with Fancy and we were talking about him putting the Iggy song on his voicemail

One dude I knew played an entire fucking 311 song on his message. Complete with the cool guy voice over

What's worse, the long greeting, or the long messages?

I have a buddy who leaves a 90 second message every time. It's completely unnecessary.

What's wrong with "Hey, Chus, it's <insert name here>. Call me back when you get a chance".

Oh my god that is 40 yards over the line in 2015

Text me, jerk.

There is almost no justification for voice mails now.

My brother is like your buddy. He will explain his entire plan for the holidays on a voice mail.

i remember back in the halcyon days of pizza pranks we ended up going through the phone book and finding odd names like.... fuck i cant remember the name, but it was some caucaian name named Dan Lohven with 50 listings, and then there'd be 50 more listings under Dan Lovhen or whatever and it was wtf. still have no idea what that was about.

we randomly found some chick who had an orgasmic answering messages and it cracked us the fuck up. suffice to say, she got a few pizzas. man we used to have wicked fun with laser pointers and ordering the pizzas for the ppl across the street. seeing them freak out with the pizzaman at the door was priceless.

The only voicemails I leave are when I call a place of business, or occasionally, my wife.

Texting is much more informal, but it does the job.

Yes, I meant in a social setting. In business it can still be valuable at times.

And if someone is driving

Maybe, but Side B of it is a great Black Keys song.

fuck texting, I got things to say

Why text when your number is already recorded. The person knows what the call is about and if not, the voicemail explains it better. Text usually ends up being a multi stage annoyance

My outgoing voicemail music was...

Yes, it was Sammy at the start of 5150.

Grievance Filed...that is an inexcusable error.

My mom leaves me voicemails as if she's having the actual conversation with me. By the time I'm done listening there is really no need to call her back.
