April 21, 2004:

Todd Walker (2B)
Corey Patterson (CF)
Sammy Sosa (RF)
Moises Alou (LF)
Aramis Ramirez (3B)
Derrek Lee (1B)
Alex Gonzalez (SS)
Michael Barrett (C)
Sergio Mitre (SP)

Other than Sergio "Meat-Tray" (the other Cubs starters were Prior, Wood, Zambrano, and Maddux), I think I'd take this lineup over the current one. Just goes to show how things can go to shit no matter how promising.

A bunch of stuff went wrong, but Borowski and Hawkins were just so fucking terrible.

I still cant fault Hendry. He made all the moves you'd want (other than getting Beltran)

Except the manager who let the clubhouse mentally go to shit and start fights with the announcers.

That is a good lineup and rotation, but there are plenty of faults for Hendry beyond 2003-4. the wheels certainly fell off for Jim....starting with the fact that he could never collect enough 2B players. Then there was the fact that he loved giving away no-trade clauses. and let's not forgot contracts for Hawkins, Milton Bradley, Soriano, and others.

Oh, no I was specifically referring to the offseason between 03 and 04. He filled all the holes and weak spots.

Mitre was the spot starter, you forgot #3 starter Matt Clement and his lack of run support.

Oh god matt clement. I haven't thought about him in years... I remember many a cocksure ("cock? SURE!") Cubs fan listing the reasons that the early-00s cubs were creeping on the come up and when you got to clement it was "HE'S A HORSE!!!!"

me: "yeah but this is baseball"

And I get the funny looks per usual.

And now it's like deja vu all over again.

no it's not, the early 00s cubs at least had pitching. can you imagine this cubs team coming across the mets in the playoffs 2-3 years from now? that rotation is going to fuck their shit up.

Said the early 00's Cub fan.

But it's baseball and shit happens. Tommy John already touched the Mets Dream rotation twice. Then you'll have a non TJ injury to like de Grom or something. And then suddenly it's 2020 and they've won nothing

C'est la vie!

They look like they might go on a nice run for a few years. Like they did back then. Nothing wrong with recognizing good things on the horizon.

But the "it's baseball" thing works for the Mets too. This isn't the first time they've had a bunch of lauded starters all coming at once- Isringhausen, Wilson, etc. Of course, they've had a couple groups that actually did something too.

Im hoping Sini sees the irony in his post about the dream staff

Its nice to have young talent. Sometimes it works (Yankees, Giants, Phillies) sometimes it doesnt (Indians, Mets, Brewers)

All things arent equal. Harvey is awesome but who knows. Johan Santana was unstoppable and then...he stopped.

Maybe one of them will pull a Zack Greinke and quit baseball. Ya just never know, especially with pitching.

They do look poised to have a great rotation if it works out.

But even great rotations dont work. That game one Lester or whoever pitches for whatever team has the game of his life and the Mets lose. Then in game 2 the defense implodes and now the dominant rotation is down 0-2 and going on the road

We probably need a 7 game first round

hey if given a choice i'll take the dream staff to handle the dream lineup.

don't forget the whole context of this is in relation to all these little cublets coming up and taking over the world. the 95 braves every year you know cuz this aint no atlanta braves type run of mediocrity. those braves didnt have dan bernstein on the airwaves telling them what's REALLY important, you know.

now THIS is truly like deja vu all over again, cubs fan! shit doesn't this basically describe the most recent diamondbacks series IIRC?

It was drawing from the DBacks and Dodgers series combined.
