Bass player for Toto. Say what you will, but Toto was a pretty killer band full of amazing musicians...

Rosanna had a killer shuffle laid down by Mike's already departed brother Jeff....great rhythm section in that band...

Hold the line is a great bass song to me.

Him and Jeff they were both great ... Toto was no slouch either, except maybe charts like "I Won't Hold You Back Now" or whatever.

You're a music guy ... find me a drummer that doesn't marvel at what Jeff was doing on 'Rosanna' and I'll show you a drummer with questionable talent and no ear.

Their old man was a big name session drummer too ... ran the gamut from Getz to Madonna to Sinatra to Gladys Knight and many more ... I think Danny Elfman and John Williams used him on occasion as well.

edit: Harvard Dan gets it.

Lukather was good as well. He is buds with EVH. I think Ed did some producing or studio helping them.

Yes, Joe was always good for a technique or professionalism article in Modern Drummer. Looking back Mike was the only member not used in the recording of Michael Jackson's Thriller...Toto was a band with three brothers that really could groove like bad-ass mo-fo's....

Jeff was all about the groove. I really didn't "get" his playing when I was a kid, but have learned to appreciate him immensely. The groove on "Lido Shuffle" is pure genius.

Just read the wiki on these guys for the first time. That is one hell of a boatload of experience in that band.

Edit: I love Lido Shuffle by the way.

Yeah, I found Rosanna to be very difficult to learn...it's an awesome drumming composition. Here is Jeff breaking it down:

Figures it comes down to Bernard Purdie. The Dan strikes again. Awesomecakes. Love that Porcaro readily gives both he and Bonzo props for the beat.

Purdie's drumming on 'Home at Last" is inspired.

Was just going to edit that in. Any reason to revisit that song is all right by me.

taken from

(editorial thought ... if you're rather well versed in Donald & Walter, listening to just Bernard do his thing by dropping everything else out, it's interesting to consider how cool it would be to transfer that feel/tempo to "Reelin' in the Years" ... same chart, different tempo/feet ... interesting. Then if you're really looking for something to keep yourself quiet, consider an alternate timeline where A&M doesn't move Michael McDonald over to the Doobie Brothers, but he stays and starts singing some lead w/ Steely Dan ... it should produce warm and fuzzy feelings without the need for drink.)

(editorial #2 ... for fun, transpose the demo shuffle from the end and blend it together with your mind's ear's version of Moondance ... pretend Boz Scaggs is doing a cover of it, and that might help ... like the inverse almost of 'All Blues').

Saw them a couple of years back and Leland Sklar was playing bass. Mike came out for a curtain call and did not look good.

If you haven't already, check out Minefields and Tambu. Great stuff. Rock music done very well...

If you have 8 mins to spare, watching Steve Lukather and Glenn Campbell just jamming is worth the view. Campbell is a fucking beast.

Me either. The session stuff he's played on, his own material, the stuff with Jerry Reed ( another superb player) just boggles the mind.
