Going to be hard to touch the first installment but I'll be honest, it looks like that similar grittiness. I don't think it is fair to compare the two side by side
but this has the potential to be good based on what I see.

The ending to the last one was horrible. Completely ruined Rust Cohle by having him essentially say "Actually life is pretty great" after one near death experience.


Im not sure about this season. Potential to be very bad.

After last season's bait and switch I'll be storing this one on the DVR until I can get confirmation once its over that it doesn't have a pathetic ending.

I'm just happy to see Vince Vaughn step away from comedy after playing the same character in every movie for the last 15 years. He does have some experience doing dark/dramatic roles, so I think he will do well.

I didnt make it thru that movie the time I started watching it. Not his fault.

Let's hope, 'cuz he sure can't do it. After reading his novel Galveston, I'm not even sure he's a good storyteller at all. He is a master of noir convention in the way he develops atmosphere, though, and his writing at the sentence level rivals Raymond Chandler's skills.

He really was. He played the entitled, why is this happening to me jerk to a tee. Who knows, maybe he wasn't acting. Also, someone mentioned The Cell, he was solid in that as well but is overshadowed by Denofrio and the visuals. Side note, if you enjoyed The Cell, check out "The Fall" and "Immortals" all there are directed by Tarsem Singh. The guy is a genius visually.

Back to Vaughnn, "The Prime Gig" is good little indie flick with Vince and Ed Harris. (Keep an eye out for an irate George Wendt) And though it's comedy related, his turn in "Made" was great as well. Again, his Ricky Slade character might not be to far off from his real life self, albeit turned up to 11, but it's fascinating to watch.

Why does so many hate season ones ending so much. Rust was damaged after his child died. He was smart but also reckless and lost. He had a moment of zen after almost being gutted. I thought the whole thing was perfect. What was left unexplained? I dont get that one.

I don't think the issue most people had was Rust's "conversion". It was that for six episodes this thing was like nothing we had ever seen on television before and in the last two it turned into Tango and Cash. And all the weirdness that seemed to be an integral part of the plot turned out to just be a cheap device to get people talking, weirdness for weirdness's sake.

I'm right there with you JORR. At the end, I felt like I was watching a run of the mill horror movie. To me, and I'm one who doesn't go out of his way to dislike things, "True Detective" will always go down as what might have been. Such buildup and then such a let down.

a multigenerational murderous cult whose membership includes u.s. senators and governors gets pinned on a schizo and his mentally challenged sister...you find that satisfying?

You want to know what went unexplained? The little girl, who had no contact with the cult, set up her dolls in the same configuration as the cult sacrifice, she made drawings identical to cult symbols at school and she displayed psychological traits of abuse.

Fans of the series have attempted to explain that away by saying Harrelson's character was hallucinating the dolls.


The writer or someone with HBO obviously knew how to work the internet. That's why they had 86 red herrings.



The way Colin Farrell chews his gum in the trailer is comical. Reminds me of a Key and Peele skit. This could be fun bad.

Or that the big psycho started screaming that he knew Rust and he actually had a tattoo of Rust's face on him. That's intentional fucking with your audience and as someone who devoted 8 hours of my life to this thing, I don't appreciate it.

I have read that as well. I'm unconvinced. There are plenty of other items. The serendipitous meeting of Woody and the girl (now woman) he saved is an unnecessary (although appreciated) twist if she ultimately had not connection to the rest of the story.

I forgot how much bullshit that didnt matter was in that show. It's almost admirable how much they squeezed in.

Remember the art on the wall in the house was similar to the killer?

What about the beer cans that Rust made into little men? The more you think about it the more disappointing it becomes.

I don't think it was bullshit that they squeezed in. I think the writer had a plan for this information and simply couldn't close.

It is such a shame. I still remember the show fondly but it could have been one of the great TV series of all time.

Also putting aside the red herrings, Rust's character was built as an introspective deep thinking jaded person. I dont buy that a near death experince completely flips that and all of a sudden the good is winning

His daughter is still dead, people will still be asking the wrong questions, and time is still a flat circle.
