is beasley that LB i saw pop up in the bears slot on a few mock drafts? i didn't really pay attention to any pre-draft coverage so i can't pretend that i know a lick about college football players like many do around this time so i'll default to having your opinion here.

bigger picture, my guess would be that a more traditional/straightforward defensive/minded coach like john fox thinks he can mould more raw replacement level athletes into cromulent defenders, therefore he was more likely to go offense with the high first round pick. if you're going to burn a high 1st on a kid who you want to "pay" top dollar for, i'm guessing that he's thinking the offensive guys are more specialized and therefore warranting that higher pick to ensure that you get a cadillac as opposed to a buick riviera.

...at least i'm hoping that's a touch of hubris here. i want the new regime here to have some sort of swagger in their mentality of "we're not giving up 30pts/game this year" and while getting a top-10 pick defensive stud would seemingly address the biggest need on this team, i'm thinking whatever hopes they have for this year rest on getting cutler to play at the highest level possible and therefore if you're giving up his boy/blankey in brandon marshall you better damn well replace him with someone who has the tangibles akin to marshall cuz i sincerely doubt your 2015 chicago bears make the playoffs because they give up 13.7pts/game on defense.
