Cubs could have won all three of these games with a healthy bullpen. This team is what I thought they would be at this stage. A good hitting team with decent pitching and below average defense. I really wish they would trade Castro already. He is a goofball and should be gone by the trade deadline along with E.Jackson.

I don't really hate any of their players now.

I really hated M.Mcgwire and his roided up HR's. W.Mcgee and his E.T neck and J.Clark.

Matt Carpenter. Looks like a junkie.

The crooked hat is stupid.

I'm frustrated with Strop but I'm not about to call him Marmol. He is giving up hits right now...he isn't walking bases loaded.

He should recover.

I agree. Seemed all in fun to me...

I had to listen to the Card announcers for this game and they went on and on about how stupid Castro was and how pissed off Rizzo was at him. I was ready to throw something at the TV.

Rizzo looked maybe annoyed right after he caught it at first...but 5 seconds later was laughing and such on camera. And when they cut back about a minute later, he was still smiling / chuckling.

You guys apply "Marmol" in a negative way?

He was great for the Cubs for years before he lost it. I could think of a million relievers who were worse that would be a better label for "bad relievers"

And of course you dont give up on Strop. Relievers are not perfect but there mistakes are magnified. He'll probably be fine and he definitely could still become a good setup guy or even closer.

Marmol had one of the most abrupt and severe plummets ever.

And I'd question your opinion of "great for years"

http://www.baseball-reference.com/playe ... ca01.shtml

He had a good four year stretch, but maybe only two of those years could be 'great.' And he had as many bad years as good years.

It was a huge drop but its pretty common with closers actually

See: Every closer ever not named Mariano

Read my edited post with additions.

Also, most closers we call great had stretches much better than 'four good years.'

Marmol didn't lose stuff, as many closers do with age. He lost the ability to throw a pitch within a foot of the zone. You could remove a batter...ask him to throw the ball to home like a ceremonial first pitch, and he couldn't do it.

No, most closers dont have longer than 4 years. Most closers actually last 2-3 years, tops.

He was great for the Cubs and a huge part of two division winning teams.

We're not talking 'closers'

More than 100 closers have more career saves than Marmol.

Even the amazing Joe Borowski.

Yeah, very rare that a closer lasts longer than 3 years.

Anyway, Marmol was very good, dominant at times, for the Cubs

I remember him fondly.

There are a zillion relievers you could use as a bad reliever example before him.

Two of his best years he was setting up. (very valuable too as Lou pretty much used him to shut down the other team in the 6th and 7th innning when Cubs had a lead)

He was great for a couple years, there is no debate.

It was more than one year, it was 4 good years and Im not saying to honor him. But to use his name like he was some terrible reliever is silly

How old were you in 07 and 08? Did you watch the team a lot then? He was fun to watch. Soooo many swings and misses

No, Im just explaining things to you. He was great for two years and pretty good overall for about 4-5 years. Anyone who knows baseball would agree.

Now it is five years? Definitely not, I just sent you his yearly statistics. Even one of those years within your 4 year stretch is debatable.

You're not remembering correctly. He may be your Starlin Castro.

No, Im remembering accurately. For some reason you have a negative opinion of Marmol and so you try to downplay the great things he did in his first four years.

He was completley dominant in 07 and 08 as a setup guy (and this cant be overstated. He wasnt just an 8th inning guy. He pitched 87 innings in 08...and dominated ) and a good closer in late 09 and 10 including setting the K/9 record in 2010. He started to lose it in year 5 which is why I put 4-5

THen he lost it, as many closers do, and he was real bad. They probably stayed with him too long. But Im not gonna only remember the last few bad years.
