He was good. He wasn't magical. But he was good. 3.50 something era... 10 plus k per 9. You'd take that on your roster every year if you could get it.

3.50 era in the N.L. as a starter ....not bad .for a #3 ...if you can toss 190 plus innings ..value yes...not noteworthy ..and I am going with your statistics.... Without looking ..he was always hurt ..never great , outside that 20k game n collected way 2 much $

Like I said he was good. He had a couple nice 200 plus inning seasons in 02 and 03. He was unstoppable in 03 until the game 7.
I'm just not ready to shit on the guy. He was good.

Wood was good.

I remember thinking how cool it was that I could send immediate electronic mail to my friends alerting them to the goings-on at Wrigley. I creatively chose the subject "We've Got Wood".

I'll always remember that day. Was playing basketball out in the parking lot of my college apartment complex and someone yelled
that Wood was lighting it up. We watched the last 4 innings.

Without looking it up I know that's not right. He's about 3.70. But he is about ten games over .500 for his career. Never did get his 300 wins though. Never even got his 100.

Yes, they should stop a game in the middle of an inning (preferably against the White Sox) and strip it off the back of the better pitcher who is now wearing it.

Never hit his potential, no doubt about that but that one day he was incredible. Making the ball do crazy things.

I remember the 20k game and some other exciting performances for sure. He was the next Clemens to be. He wasn't. His 162 game averages for 14 year career were 9-8, 3.67 and 172k's. http://www.baseball-reference.com/playe ... ke02.shtml Of course his reliever time skews that with 63 career saves. It is typical of players on teams that are favorites of the fans and get over loved.

Hell he wasn't statistically better than even Jack McDowell. http://www.baseball-reference.com/playe ... ja01.shtml

Well, he was and he wasn't. He certainly wasn't as good a pitcher as McDowell, but Wood was a special guy. I'm pretty sure that the only guy who struck out more per nine is Randy Johnson. I'm not sure if that's an accolade or an indictment when you consider his overall career. A guy who can strike men out like that has a huge advantage. But Wood managed to squander that advantage a lot of the time. In a way, he's similar to Nolan Ryan- with a much smaller career, of course. Their raw ability far exceeded their skill at pitching a real life ballgame.

And I think that's where the disconnect between my ideas about starting pitchers and the conventional modern wisdom lies. Pitchers are now judged on raw stuff (which is measured largely in Ks and WHIP) rather than game management. The best guys are great at both, but guys like Moyer and Buehrle understand how to pitch a big league ballgame better than Wood or Ryan ever could.

He was a good pitcher that any time would have liked to have on their rotation. He couldn't stay healthy enough grow into being a great or HoF pitcher. That's sad, but it's the way it went down.

You do not retire numbers for "good" players.

When Kerry hit that home run I thought that was it, this was the year.

I forgot my lesson learned when Hester ran back the SB opening kickoff years later.

I hate everything.

You can't score fractions of a run. Why does 3.50 ERA versus 3.70 ERA matter?

Well, think about what you're saying. With a pitcher it's one man. It's a simple average. No different than a batting average. Over enough time it tells you how the player fared against a wide variety of oopponents in a wide variety of situations and conditions.

The average runs scored by a team during a season is quite different. Kerry Wood goes out on a given day and he's probably going to allow three runs and pitch about seven innings. Once in a while he'll throw a 20 K shutout and once in awhile he'll get killed but those are anomalies. He isn't compiling his 3.70 by throwing a shutout one day and allowing seven the next. With a team's offense the performance is all over the place. And that is largely dependent upon the pitchers the team is facing on a given day.

Actually, I'm not. Kerry Wood's 3.70 ERA is based mainly on his own performance vs. the men he faces. A team's average runs scored is created against myriad different pitchers. The argument only comes up when someone is apologizing for a shitty losing pitcher using the average amount scored by his team as the reason he cannot defeat opponents with regularity. See Jose Quintana.

The three things besides the obvious fan interference controversy that I remember from that series:
1.) Wood choking game 7
2.) Dusty post-game with his kid on his knee.
3.) Barry Rozner telling us it's over when they went up,3-1.

Fractions of runs are not possible, whether you are a pitcher, batter, or team.
