And yet Hawkins went into the 2015 season as a teams closer.

And yet Latroy Hawkins had a better (in many ways) four year stretch with Minnesota and the Cubs than Marmol had.

2002-2005

22-15, 2.52 ERA, 98 GF, 33 SV, 3.19 FIP, 1.115 WHIP, 3.68 SO/W

Marmol 2007-2010

11-12, 2.54 ERA, 127 GF, 61 SV, 3.12 FIP, 1.158 WHIP, 2.29 SO/W

So Carlos Marmol was great but Latroy Hawkins sucked?

Hawkins was great in Minnesota that's why the Cubs got him.

I dont remember his Twins days fondly because Im not a Twins fan. On the Cubs he was pretty bad.

Yeah, relievers numbers can mislead sometimes. He was bad for Cubs in 04 and 05. Tons of blown saves and they always came in huge games they needed.

Edit: 9 fucking blown saves in 04. They won 89.

Here's a hilariously detailed blog on the 9

Are you counting games won when the opposing closer blew a lead in those 89?

I wasnt really applying the numbers in that way. Just that they were in contention and within a few games of the wild card.

As opposed to years where they win 73 and a few more Wins wouldnt really matter

He blew saves, but had 15 losses in the same period Marmol had 12. Blown saves suck, but the end result is a win or a loss. And then you have to look at save opportunities between the two...one run vs three run, etc.

Remember the game Marmol blew in the playoffs against the Diamondbacks?

In 2008, Marmol only gave up 40 hits. Wow. Outstanding! 10 were home runs... "oh shit."

Even when he was good, he was bad. And we should have realized that his love for the walk and home run would be his downfall. I think he was lucky more than good.

Marmol sucked. Why are we even having this conversation? He was a one pitch wonder for one year.

Because of ridiculous statements like that /\

He was good for a number of years. Then he was real bad for a couple years. No need to deny either part.

Arrieta got out of a jam there. Hopefully that'll be the whole you need to get a good pitcher early or you don't get him inning.

The guy was even worse than Dave Smith as a Cub. That's hard to do. Little kid me was so hyped when they signed Danny Jackson, George Bell and Dave Smith. Dammit! Why am I reliving those past horrors?

Let's move on to today. It would be HUGE to come away with the split so let's hope Arrieta brings it this afternoon.

Agree. Maybe a little late night action and they aren't awake yet.

Carlos Marmol was a giant fluke, but he was a fun fluke.

Arrieta doesn't look good at all. Castros error lets a run in.

Think that's a good choice. The passes they're making at Lackey don't look good and I figure the Cards to add on a couple more . Doesn't look like a 5 run day that the Cub are going to need

Had a feeling the Cubs offense would look bad today. They have problems hitting pitchers with average stuff. Its like facing Mike Fiers again.
