men's feet are gnarly stuff. not sure why dudes want to show 'em off with flip flops.

I wear shorts and flip flops all winter. Usually if it gets below 32 or there's snow on the ground I put on shoes and if it gets below zero the pants come on. I shovel snow in shorts.

This is quite an introduction to a subculture I was not aware of.

Not at all. I personally could not imagine wearing shorts in the winter. It's got to be "shorts weather" for me to put them on.

it's a variety of reason zippy.

feet get dirty/dusty walking around with flip flops if you're in a city setting (essential foot wear among wrigleyville/lp males)
they get caught in a crowded setting and the person gets all salty
flip flops aren't really safe to drive with (crocs aren't muuuuuch better but they are slightly safer)
cheap flips flops are prone to breaking and the person wearing becomes an incesssant whiner
