Great docu, does such a great job it even gets bad when courtney love gets into the documentary, so it is just like his real life.

A great watch on HBO

i'm definitely going to check it out. but i loved "about a son", which was as simple as you could get as a documentary. simply audio footage from an interview over music, with visual footage of cobain's hometown and locales.

Saw a commercial for this the other day and was wondering when it would be on. I'll definitely check it out, maybe this weekend.

This was an incredibly absorbing and intimate film. It allows you inside his psyche at times, showing his disturbed side, exposing his drug habit and how it affected him physically, emotionally and mentally...how sensitive he really was about being accepted and being wanted (he felt rejected by his mother, and was devastated by his parents' divorce). the home videos of him as a child, and him with his child, are really heart breaking. in both, we see the same person...but in between, there was a lot of darkness. and i still say he had crohn's disease that was never treated or even diagnosed. he was his own worst enemy but he was not always self destructive.

i was surprised by a few omissions of his personal life...first, he was heavily into the melvins. they never really get into that, and i always thought they were a big influence on him. also, he was rejected by the seattle underground at the time. the sub pop elite thought he was a sell out, pop radio friendly songwriter and not really "hard core". he also had a long term relationship with a riot grrrl for a while that shaped some of his lyrics in later songs.

not that i was missing those little tidbits, the film's 113 minute length is definitely enough to carry you through the journey of his short but poignant life. it's sad when you see someone with so much personality and so much vitality leave it all behind so young. but it happens a lot...i think he would've been a good dad though. his music may have suffered, and at 48 now if he were still alive maybe he'd be considered lame or whatever...but he certainly left a hell of a mark on the musical world.

i highly recommend it to nirvana/kurt fans. for those not a fan, you may be turned off by the length, and by some of the really crazy imagery and screamy vocal background dressing in some scenes.

:D :D :D out of :D :D :D :D

Watched this last night and it was very well done and interesting. I'm listening to the Nirvana Unplugged disc right now.

Dying at 27 is the key apparently. You can add Amy Winehouse and a few other smaller names to this list as well.

This was pretty good. Some good footage I'd never seen before.

One thing kept gnawing at me the whole time and I'm surprised no one here mentioned it, that being the glaring lack of Dave Grohl in the documentary. Why wasn't he interviewed? Apparently he was busy working on an album, but he did sit down for an interview after the film was finished but the director decided it was too late to include it. Seems like a bad decision to me since it was in hte back of my mind the entire time I was watching it.

Also found some of the later abstract imagery scenes to be grating an annoying with the high pitched sound constantly playing in the background.

Overall it was pretty good but didn't shed any new light on Cobain, but I do appreciate the footage I've never seen before.

Yes some of the home video footage was interesting as well as some of the journals in his handwriting really helped hammer home how he was hurting.

I also think they did a poor job explaining his stomach problems which were a huge part of his daily life. We're the stomach problems caused by heroin? Or were they present before and did the heroin help with the pain? Did he kill himself because of the constant stomach problems? These are questions that were around 20 years ago and still haven't been answered sufficiently. The doc did nothing in that regard.

could be, but its unfortunate that 20 years later and after a supposed comprehensive doc we are still left guessing. Would've been nice if they had some discussion about that since it was quite possibly the reason he killed himself.

the stomach issue was corrected about 8-10 months before he died.
