He's 8 and plays in the local house leagues. He's OK. Pretty good endurance so he runs around a lot. Not a lot of ball skills. Very passive and generally plays defense even when on offense.

I know absolutely jack squat about soccer. Any ideas as to how to coach him up a bit?

1) Make a daily or weekly time commitment to him.
2) Check Youtube, it's an awesome resource for soccer drills that will enhance his skills
3) Be encouraging. Don't worry about where he plays. Soccer needs good defenders as well as offensive weapons
4) Be patient with him and make the time together enjoyable
5) Tell him you are proud of him. Affirmation builds self confidence.

Make sure he is kicking with the inside of his foot. As they get older, they get more power in their kicks and will hurt his toe when he kicks if he learns the wrong way.

Pass, pass and more passing. Soccer at that age should focus on passing. Lots of kids just want to shoot a goal. The team and your son will have more fun if he learns to include his teammates.

Make sure he understands Offense, Defense and Mid-Field. If he has lots of energy then Mid-Field would be a good place for him.

Shoutout to you for being involved in his sport.

Yeah, then do what Seacrest said and he should be fine.

You would be surprised how popular soccer is with today's youth. More kids play soccer in my town then baseball.

OK. good advice. I'll try to go out and play with him a bit when I get home and before I get loaded. sending my wife to library for "rules of soccer" book.

Seriously though I coached my kids at that beginning soccer age. They don't do anything but swarm around the ball. It is like the ball is honey and they are all bees.
