Having watched the final episode a few times, Don had to walk away from everything in order to become enlightened and inspired and then return to what he does best....advertising. I got the happy ending that I was hoping for Don Draper, and most of the charachters had happy endings too.
I was hoping though to see one more Don Draper pitch back in New York before the "I'd like to teach the world to sing"closing scene.

Best drama in the history of television.

In the finale, Don also gives the same advice to the single mother that he gives to Peggy early in the series--about forgetting the past and pushing forward so that things "get easier" every day. At the same time that his work preaches the ethos of togetherness inspired by communal living, Don is encouraging those around him to reject their connections to others, just as he has destroyed his relationship with his children. There has always been a brilliant cynicism at work in the series--best illustrated through the remarkably clever lines given to Roger Sterling--but this last episode really brings things together perfectly.

Looking back at this series, Mathew Weiner did a masterful job of weaving the numerous internet rumors about how the show would end, into various episodes. He teased us. He gave us many zig zags & head fakes...D.B. Cooper, Airplanes, Megan is Sharon Tate, Don will jump out of a window, etc. Even if he had planned to take one of these paths, he couldn't due to the popularity of such rumors & internet chatter.

The Coca Cola ending was just perfect.

I'd like to see the Don Draper story continue. After cementing his status as the premier ad man of his time, Draper is courted by the Republican Party to develop its messaging. He quickly becomes the chief mythologist for the far right, identifies Ronald Reagan as the perfect canvas for his continuing battle with the legacy of the 1960s, and personally triumphs over the counterculture by creating Reagan's "Morning in America" narrative.

The logical subject for a sequel to Mad Men is Peggy and her ascent within corporate America. Unfortunately, though, that story wouldn't be too fresh--it's already been told via a variety of films.

It's been a long time so I don't remember all the foreshadowing but there were some pretty clear indications. It's fiction so you can't say anything for sure happened but based on the things like Tony on that boat talking about how "when it comes, you'll never see it coming" (or something to that effect) want to lead you to believe that he was killed.

Well, in an earlier episode Tony and Bobby have a conversation about what it feels like to get whacked. Bobby specifically says, "You probably don't even hear it when it happens." That's notable in the final scene when there is no gunshot. Journey just stops playing abruptly.

Finally, the last scene features distinctive camera work which the show did not normally use, i.e. the POV shot (Tony's). The sequence each time the door opens is very specific: Shot on Tony, bell rings, Tony looks up, Tony's POV shot of door with person walking in. You're being trained about what to expect in the next frame. Carm is the third person through the door. The next time Tony is looking up already before the bell rings. The killer (Members Only) walks in followed by AJ. The tension builds as Meadow haplessly tries to parallel park. Members Only heads to the restroom. The bell rings for the last time. Cut to Tony's face. The next logical shot in the sequence should be Meadow coming through the door. Tony doesn't see it. He's dead. Killed by Members Only.

Yup. A positive happy ending for all except Betty. I'm not sure what to think about Don though. Every personal relationship that he had outside of work went to hell for him & I assume that continued after going back to New York & creating the Coke ad.
I would pay big money to see a Don Draper sequel.
