Last night had Tom Hanks and a musical performance by Eddie Vedder. It was alright.

too bad Larry Bud Melman wasn't around for one last laugh

I used to love Letterman throwing stuff off the top of buildings.

Her Wiki page says that she now earns a living from a webcam in her bedroom.

Agreed...the Chris Elliot stuff from the early years was outstanding. I view the show's trajectory like The Simpsons...ten years of gold, and then becoming comfortable.

When it was probably Dave and Chris writing most of the stuff...or Chris writing it and Dave chuckling at it, and saying "Ok, lets try it"...Now you know they have 7 writers who each have 2 assistants.....

Great stuff. This is one of my favorites:

As a yout, I remember watching a stupid human trick evening, and then the next day I was with my father shopping at a Dominick's when lo and behold, I see a worker there that looks suspiciously like the guy from last night who would flip plungers up in the air and get them stuck on his bald head. After asking my father if he thought it was the same guy, we must have been looking a little too long because the guy goes "yeah, it's me!" and goes off to do more Dominick's work. :)

Bill Murray on last night. Once again it was just okay. Nothing new, just reminiscing about the old days with reels of old tape.
Very odd performance by Bob Dylan, obviously Dave is a fan and asked him to be on the show for the first time in over 20 years.

I really like Letterman early on and a lot of what has been mentioned here, but Johnny Carson will always be the king of late night.

Here's a Letterman/Elliott piece from the early days (really makes me feel old).

All of these guys stole liberally from Steve Allen. The comedy stunts, interviewing people in the streets, going out to talk to the audience. Hell, the table with the mic, the band, the monologue... Only thing not stolen is the piano, because he doesn't play.

All this Tonight Show stuff is Steve Allen. Mind you, Jay and Dave have both acknowledged that debt (don't know about Kimmel; Conan's an Allen fan so I expect he has.) Carson and Paar wanted to pretend they innovated far more than they did.

In any road, bye-bye the Dave. And yeah, I expect to see Jay tonight.

Just looking at some of the headlines on various web sites, they're saying this last show was awesome. I didn't read further because I don't want to spoil it for myself.

Yes, I see that Dave Grohl will be on hand ferrying another pop culture icon across the river of significance like a slacker Charon.

I never had any affinity for Letterman. Not lovable in any sense. Just a smartass. You were not like him. He was above you. Yes, maybe funny, but I don't like him. Never did.

Carson being an ass is a bummer.

What a superlative final installment.

If you didn't like that, you've got issues.

Man,how old are you? I remember Steve's second talk show out of California. He was hilarious and I agree with everything you said. Still,Letterman also cracked me up. It was a great finale.
