Friend from college has had a girlfriend for 4-5 years. I believe this girl is great for him. Not sure if he could do better. She adores him. He's off to a master's program for 2 years and he's insistent that his girlfriend move to this new city with him. After undergrad she worked in her hometown and moved to chicago after two years.

His current occupations has him travel 4 days a week.

She is willing to do long distance during these 2 years and refuses to move from chi to new city. He insists on her moving or he's ending the relationship.

He believe LD relationships rarely work and are destined for failure.

I think both people are great so I'm torn as I hope they stay together.

I have my feelings on who is right/wrong/whatever when trying to dispense my advice to him. What would you say CSFMB? Who is being logical? What would you offer as advice?

What a mess. They should have been married already or have ended the relationship before 5 years. Obviously if they are not ready for marriage now they will never be. Time to end the charade.

Try to get in her pants. Your friend is probably lame anyways.

Agreed. Shit of get off the pot.

There's a reason she won't go with him. In her eyes, why would she uproot her life and make a commitment for a dude that won't do the same.

I like her decision, and he needs to figure the fuck out what he wants to do. Just make sure you are there to console her if it all goes bad. :D

What city?

Out of college, I took a job here. My husband was trying to choose between a job here that would have him travel and a job in Iowa. I said I would not move to Iowa. He's right most ld relationships don't work. After 4-5 years of dating I'd think they'd have similar visions for their futures though.

As Spaulding asked, how far away will he be and is it a real shit hole of a town? I did long distance thing in college and when I took a
job with the first company that I worked at for 7-8 months. It wasn't easy but I wasn't married either. I dated my first wife for 9
years and then was married for 9 before things didn't work out. Definitely not easy to do but distance makes a difference and how
often they would be able to see one another.

A 2 year program = September of this year to May of 2017? So they only have 1 Summer of this altered living situation.

Probably he can do a Summer internship back in Chicago?

And the down-time built into the academic calendar means plenty of time together between terms/semesters. holidays, extended weekends.

This is worse than the salmon conundrum from yesterday.

look this is one where your good friend is asking for advice/support and you look at situation and go "ooooh, i think you're being the irrational one here" but you kinda don't want to say that b/c he's already on tilt.

so figured i'd toss it to my fellow internet friends to see if anyone shares his POV.

given the responses in the thread he's on an island here.

How's his credit? Have him invest in a frequent flyer mile program on a credit card or something.

Is he going to Wharton for his MBA? Temple for film school? Drexel for psychology? St Joe's for Masters of Ed?

If the first, then she's being irrational.

of, if you plan ahead and don't have any luggage (not even a carry on) and will never miss your flight or desire any sort of change to your itinerary and print out your boarding pass at home ahead of time and say the rosary nightly for a week before your flight as well as visit a santeria botanica shop and have the witch doctor cast a spell in your favor, Spirit Air really does have super cheap flights (fingers crossed and best of luck. i'd rather take my chances spending a weekend in 26th and Cali again than ever fly Spirit Air again).

then his Summer job/internship likely will be in lower Manhattan and he'll not be returning to Chicago after graduation. Either she goes with and takes her chances surviving the Streets of Philadelphia or they're done [imo, ymmv, yadda]. Image

Do the long-distance thing and then if dude's still into her and she's into him, pop the question and put a ring on it either this or next Christmas. Once she's planning nuptials, she'll not be arsed about anything he's doing. Unless he's one of those weird guys who like women around for more than sex and sandwich-making.

I had an apartment in a building where a lot Kellogg students lived (course we had four living in an apartment where one of them would've been).

You'd think it was a porn studio from all the moaning and fuck noises I heard. Chicks in MBA programs want to be like men: aggressive, powerful, and horny as hell.
