There was a Chicago magazine article this month about kids at relatively young ages changing genders. At first this is done via hair cuts, wrappings, potatoes, etc.

But at some point the hormone treatments start, breast/penis removals, etc. (Oddly enough a couple days ago the Trib reported the State House passed a Bill banning this I think).

I was like YIKES, 14 years old and you're cuttin off your breasts? Is that a good idea?

I think by 14 we all know our gender identity, so if you gotta be a man then, you probably are gonna do it when you're 25 anyway. So what's the problem?

I dunno. As a fairly open minded Christian I can't seem to agree with this whole thing as being "OK."

What do you think about the morality of a sex change from a medical perspective? If a person feels he would be more comfortable with no legs, would it be appropriate for a doctor to amputate them?

anyhoo. back to the question at hand. the reason this inerests me more than your average bizarre topic is that we actually know a family like this. normal, conservativish catholic family. from about 2nd or 3rd grade, the girl was different. she dressed like a guy, cut her hair short, etc. if you didn't know you'd have thought it was a boy. I guess the family would have none of it until around middle school and by then she was having psychological problems..depression, etc. So they let her do what she wanted. now in high school "the person" has started hormone treatments and wants to go further down the path...

I am not certain how this works in these new insane times but I seem to remember things differently. In cases of changing I thought doctors (ethical ones at least) required all sorts of psychological and other testing and waiting periods and other methods before cutting things off so to speak. I do not think it is something you wake up and just do. Being a father of teenagers I cannot see a way in which a 14 year old convinces someone beyond any doubt that then is the time for this change.

Kid is still a kid, looks like there may have been other issues not discussed or dealt with. Not emotionally developed enough (or physically) to start chopping off body parts and taking hormones. Can't do geometry but hey let's change this kids sex. What could possibly go wrong?

On a somewhat related topic, I saw a size 22, 298lb. "supermodel" plastered all over TV today. That's just ducky that she's comfortable with herself at that weight, but it's not healthy and should not be praised or encouraged. Your organs are packed in fat, you're increasing your chances of developing heart disease and diabetes, and your hips and knees are under a tremendous amount of strain.

But...YAY! You're so empowered and beautiful!

What if the parents wanted a Boy but had a Girl? Can they have the baby or infant change genders?

Well what are you going to do if after 5 years of trying to make your girl a girl, you are not getting anywhere but misery and depression?

I would probably let her dress or modify her appearance however she wanted but said no to any medical type stuff, hormones, etc.

Being a parent can be incredibly challenging. Abdicating your role as a parent and allowing a child to do what they want is a recipe for disaster.

I'm not sure what I think about this. I don't have a strong opinion. But for the sake of argument, I'll say that perhaps nature made her a girl physically, but not in other ways. Do you think nature makes mistakes? Is an abnormality a mistake? Maybe it's deeper than just what the child "wants".

No matter how much most of us follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly, we're simply not going to look like models. However, that's not an excuse to say "You don't have to be stick thin to be beautiful! #effyourbeautystandards."

They're just setting themselves up for a lot of health problems that are relatively easy to avoid.

if a kid is born with a club foot, should we allow doctors to "fix" that? God made the kid that way for a reason, right? Aren't we interfering with God's plan?
