My sister used to work for TSA.

She was working at a small airport in the Southwest. They only have two checkpoints and one of them was down. The single checkpoint was extremely crowded. The machine red-flagged an item going through. There's an entire procedure that they are supposed to follow. I mean, this could be a bomb of some sort. But the supervisor advised my sister to move the package in question off to the side and do some shit that wasn't in the book. He was concerned about keeping traffic moving and covering his ass in case this was a test. My sister refused and asked the supervisor what would happen in the unlikely event that it was actually a bomb and they blew up the fucking airport by failing to follow procedure. He had her fired.

but on September 3rd 2005 I realized in flight that I had...

1 Bic Cigarette lighter in my pocket
1 3" folding knife in my carry on (which I used to strip some bark off a birch to start a fire a couple days before and slipped into my "beach bag" which I then shoved into my carry on without thinking about it)
1 box cutter in my carry on.

Never had a problem with TSA.

However flying out of DFW sometime in June of 2009 I was told they couldn't see thru the indian head on my hockey jersey and was molested in a private room.

You ever been to O'Hare or any other airport in the United States? This doesn't surprise me in slightest.

It's a giant bureaucracy and employment machine that creates votes and is tied to all sorts of stuff in the federal budget.

It isn't there for improved security.

There's 0% chance those x-ray machines are giving us all cancer, right??

this is insane, but im not surprised. i just wish they would make changes to reflect reality. reality is airports are NO safer now than they were in the 80's when you could walk right up to the gate without any security lock in.

Some time after 9/11, I flew with my mom and sisters out to Vegas. As we were waiting to go through security, I had to go to the bathroom. I came back and my mom was pulled off to the side and her luggage was being searched. She had packed a travel alarm clock (because the clocks in the hotels aren't to be trusted) and as soon as her bag went through x-ray, everyone pretty much freaked. I still cannot believe she didn't realize that was not a wise choice. "I guess I didn't even think about it" was her quote, IIRC.
