Generational talent.

C;early a GREAT hitter but as someone who watched Mays and Mantle in the late 50's and early 60's if you are looking for a 5 tool generational talent it is NOT "The Big Hurt" a 20-30 arm, 30 speed and 30-40 Glove. 80 hit 75 power clearly a 2 tool All time great and a deserved HOFer.

Was Ted Williams a "generational talent"?

JORR I only saw the last few years of Ted but a 4 time MVP certainly a GREAT hitter... not a stolen base guy ... average in the field but I did not see him at his peak... and he really missed his peak years during WWII I would not put him on the 5 tool Mt. Rushmore but clearly Generational... I do not think there can be only one guy for each 25 year span.

Who is yur % tool Mt. Rushmore hitters only no pitchers..who are the four 5 tool pitchers?

Well, Mays and Mantle are no-brainers. How about Griffey and Trout as the other two? I think Trout has shown us enough. I suppose he could get hurt or freakishly drop off.

What are the 5 tools in question for pitchers?

The ability to throw within 15 feet of first base would be nice.

If you mean Griffey Jr. I would have to agree...same with Trout if he can put up another 5 years.

Most people grade pitchers on at least three pitches... one is almost always the Fastball and then the curve the third could be either slider or change up. two need to be elite 70-80 grade and the third at ;east a 60. Command/Control is the 4th tool and make up which is intensity, focus and character.
if we limit it to guys I saw. There are many old guy Cy Young, Walter Johnson, Christy Matthewson but those would be based on what others saw not what I actually witnessed.

1. Randy Johnson
2. Nolan Ryan
3. Sandy Koufax
4. Bob Gibson

honorable mention: Greg Maddux, Tom Seaver, Pedro Martinez and Juan Marichal.... I'd put in Mariano Rivera but he really was a one pitch guy but it was lights out.

Well, he obviously didn't have the command/control tool.

I would have Seaver and Randy Johnson for sure. Maybe Kershaw. Maybe Marichal.

Kershaw needs to do it for a few more years .... I could see him getting a spot.

Later in his career Ryan did not have the control issues that plagued him early on and if you went to see him you almost felt like you expected a no no and at least a dozen K's.

it seems fair to use only who you have seen...otherwise it is a lot of hearsay.

How about 5 toll hitters ... hit for avg, power, speed , glove and arm?

No Carlton love? Top lists are dumb and so hard to do. top tens were tough enough and now everyone goes with the nauseatingly fashionable top five with everything. Keep your rushmore silliness as well.

Come on Mike it's all in fun...no right or wrong answers... Who are your top 4 five tool players either of all time or who you saw. Do the same with pitching..... it's a chance to talk baseball without all the "my teams better" stuff that usually goes on here.....

No Carlton love in my top 4 but no hate either...

Dont mind JORR. His posts are a result of a tragic massive head wound that he never got treated and Sinic's thoughts have been leaking in when sanity has been leaking out.
