Looks like he gave back that 1.0 to his era that the score update guy said he lost off it over last three starts.

Forget the prediction of what he was going to do at this point....I guess you keep him in hopes he has 3 more good outing so you can trade him then...

even when Shark was pitching better than Sale last year, I said Shark still needs to show a full season of not having those disaster innings on constant basis....so my thoughts on him havn't changed since he was a Cub.

Bottom line is that he can pitch like an Ace, but he isnt an Ace.

It seems like the guy has made the game unwinnable in the first inning in half his starts

Theo wins. He trades Hammel and Shark for real talent. They both proceed to suck for the A's. Shark saps the Sox of some talent, and proceeds to suck for them. The Cubs re-sign Hammel and get good value. To complete the circle of success, the Cubs would need to sign Shark to an attractive team friendly deal and then he returns to form.

I'm cool with that not happening.

His stat line while with the Cubs in 2014, sub-3 ERA, but you knew that didn't you?

Which yielded a 2-7 record. For a guy so good, a whole lot of guys seemed to pitch better than he did during the actual games he pitched.

I'll take a sub-3 ERA starter anytime. I suspect the Cubs' hitting is a bit more timely in 2015 than 2014, but you knew that didn't you?

The concept of timely hitting aka "clutch" is specious at best, or didn't you know that?

No, enlighten me. It seems to me that a team scoring 4 runs per game in 2015 would do well with a pitcher who would give up less than 3 runs per game.

Teams don't score four runs per game. Some may average four runs per game. And Samadzija doesn't allow three runs per game. Sometimes he allows 1 and sometimes he allows 8 and more often than not he allows more than his opponent who you would like us to believe usually isn't as good as Jeff Samardzija.

I agree. You'd have to be a moron to think a guy who pitches losing baseball in every possible situation is just unlucky.

Ah, that one glorious half season where he reached a peak never seen before or since at an age where most players reach their career peaks.

JORR, are we willing to agree that Samardjiza is a loser?

We do agree. But I don't see how you can agree to that without agreeing that his ERA and WHIP are not as indicative of his abilities as are his results in real competition.

The explosion of available statistics seems to have caused people- many of whom should know better- to view the game as a battle between averages rather than as a battle between human beings. There's more to successfully pitching a big league game than simply limiting baserunners or even runs scored. The context of each specific game is everything.

This is true. I am sure Brady and the Patriots regressed to the mean as whatshisname caught that off his helmet.

All I'm saying is that this dude is a loser. I don't care which statistic you use to prove that. You can use his ERA. You can use his career W/L record. You can point to the fact he's had one goddamn winning season. You could say his WHIP sucks. Or you could use the eyeball test. Whatever it takes man I don't care. He's a loser.
