Got invited to a couple in the coming weeks. We never had a graduation ceremony, and definitely not parties, for going from 8th grade to HS, where I grew up. You're supposed to pass 8th grade. A load of horse shit.

That's pretty common in these parts Greg.

So I'm definitely in the minority. I called a buddy to vent about the invites...and he gets quiet and says "Well, we were just getting ready to send out invites for ours (his stepson)." Oops.

I would think graduating from 8th grade in AR would be quite a milestone for someone that lives near Searcy.

im with ya red.

but maybe its not all bad

when i "graduated" 8th grade, i never had a C in my life. A/B student the whole time.

and mom was PISSED i got a B- in one class and ALMOST a C

I honestly just said FUCK IT at that point. i felt i had done years of repetition by that time, and high school was going to be the same bullshit, and it was.

and nobody seemed to give a shit either- did anyone want me in honors classes? no. did anyone say "you should really be doing this?" yes- ONE fucking teacher. sophmore chemistry teacher... she gave us a 4 week 'college' course, molecular equations. I aced it, one of only 3 kids in the class that could do them. she pulled me aside after class one day and said 'you know, you would do really well in college chemistry, i would strongly consider it'

but by that time it was too late. i didnt give a fuck. i was getting D's in other classes because i didnt feel like doing the homework, and i only did the molecular equations because i was pissed that everyone in the class acted like they were so hard. college was the last thought in my mind at that point.

so, party for 8th grade graduation? maybe a bit too much, but at the same time its not a bad thing to celebrate achievements. and do your kid a favor- make sure there will be other freshmen girls there, trust me that will help.

Not here. We don't even do Kindergarten graduation. They have pre school then High School. That's it. I'm glad for it.

At 42 yrs old it's something I've seen and experienced with my older siblings my whole life...very normal and regular behavior in these parts.

This where foolishness rules...the Kindergarten or Pre K, graduation ceremonies....I understand a parent needing to attend such a ceremony....

one of my guys once used this excuse....'Cant go because I am going to the graduation of my fiances moms boyfriends kids kindergarden graduation."

We hold it against him to this day.....

Three of my siblings and I are 4 years apart, so the 8th grade graduation just piggybacked on the HS graduation.

It's always fun to have or go to a party. If nothing else make the connection with the young teen and older teen. Those can be rough years. They like the cash too.

My parents did take me out to eat pizza or something but not that day. Grandparents sent me $20 and a card. No big deal. Now kids have elementary school graduation. Really?

I remember loving all those parties back as an 8th grader. It really was the first glimpse at going to parties unattended by my parents.

Freshman year of high school is traumatic for 90% of the population. Let the kids have their fun together one last time.

I guess if you are in a public school where everyone will be going on to the same school the next year it isn't that big of a deal. Going to catholic schools, I had friends moving on to several different places.

I agree they are absurd. but I just say no. my wife thinks they are silly too so at least I've got that going for me. she asked "do I need to get them a card at least?"…no. if I was a kid I'd rather have no card than an empty card. we have a family closish to us who does one for all their kids at the end of every school year.

for most I think its just an excuse to have another cookout. "we bought too many burgers and hotdogs for memorial day walt, what are we going to do with these?"

I wouldn't mind the parties if I had the time. it’s the ceremonies that would chap me.

You're supposed to graduate from high school, too. Let kids have a pool party or whatever.

We had the family over for each of our kids 8th grade grads. For High School grad we had huge blowout partys with friends, family, and whoever else. Nothing wrong at all with celebrating the kids success.

I peaked athletically in 4th grade and academically in 7th.

I have two 8th grade graduation parties on Sunday.

Party #1 in the books. I went up to the "graduate" on Saturday to congratulate him. He laughingly says "thanks," beaming with a smirk that screamed "I can't believe they're celebrating this shit." Kudos to him.
