What the hell is the point of Coomer doing play-by-play? I thought Hughes just did it as a power play so he could go burn a mule for a couple innings.

But, I was listening to part of the game last night and Hughes was in the booth. First off, Coomer is horrible at PBP. He sounds like a high school kid trying to describe the action. So, he'll give a indecipherable explanation of the events and then Hughes will pitch in with a 15-second retelling of what just happened with the actual PBP of an event that has already occurred. It's pointless.

Really. What is the point if Hughes is sitting right there?

I don't get it. Coomer isn't that great at analysis and he really sucks at PBP.

Reading into it is that Hughes is planning to retire and seeing if they can groom Coomer to do PBP.

Probably don't want to replace the whole radio team at once and seeing if they can get Coomer to do something worth while.

But Hughes has been doing this for a while, hasn't he? Even when Santo was there didn't Sirott or somebody sit in for a couple innings to spell him?

Yeah, this isn't anything new. Sometimes Pat Hughes comes back from the shitter earlier and jumps back on the microphone while Coomer finishes the inning. Same thing when Moreland was here...Moreland would sometimes do the PBP. And Sirott sometimes did PBP. And back in the day, Masur did it. And since Masur and Santo were both there, no reason for Pat to be a third man.

Hughes does not seem like he wants to retire any time soon.

His voice needs to be immortalized with his call of the Cubs 2016 World Series victory.

Let's be honest...if we're going to hear a voice announce this for the next four centuries, it should be Hughes and not Kasper.

IIRC, Coomer does an inning of PBP every game. It's not here and there. And unfortunately, it seems to be whenever I turn the game on while I'm driving.

At his best coomer was a replacement level player.... So go figure he's a replacement level at best announcer. He's "just a guy" and likely below replacement level in his average season/ballgame.... C'eat la vie.

So it seems he's taken over the Cory provus / Jim memelo /whatstheotherguy'sname (1/2)/inning relief role while pat goes off and rubs one out or whatever he does.... Except pat comes back to the booth and masquerades as a color guy for at least a 1/2 inning?, hmmm it sounds like it's another iteration of pat's break but they don't trust Cooter enough to do the vin Scilly one man booth so they have pat cone back and hang out on the analysis to not leave coomdawg hanging out there.

I just now realize my phone changes COOMER to cooter. I'm gonna let it roll

one day...one day they will give Pat an ACTUAL partner. Until then they're better off with him solo. Moreland was unlistenable after a little while and I could not stand Santo. Coomer's not terrible for a color guy but not great either. Imagine Pat and Stone on the TV...

I don't have a problem with Kasper at all. I find him a fairly easy listen.

Coomer is awful. He was a terrible hire. I'm hoping that with the White Sox departure from The Score at the end of this season, that Stone becomes Hughes broadcast partner next year on 670.
Hughes and Kasper are great PBP guys, unfortunately both are partnered with buffoons.

Pat Hughes and Steve Stone called the 2003 postseason together. I thought they did very well, but of course, that was 12 years ago, I don't claim to remember it with perfect clarity.

I went from finding Len Kasper annoying to appreciating him back to finding him annoying again. It was bad enough when he really started defining his Personal Brand as the cool hipster-dad type who plays in a band on the weekend, but once he started being a total management kissass on top of that (probably because dissent cost him his hipster-dad bandmate), I got fed up.

When all the shit went down with Chip and Stoney, I felt that the Cubs should just simulcast Pat and Ron. Even with Harry's grandson in the booth, I felt like Pat had taken on the "official" Voice Of The Team position.

Dr. Ken has always been one of the best posters around here. Kasper is a GREAT call....for TV. Especially for the Cubs. He can call a game, relate to the blue-hairs, and still bring in some modern stuff.

He's the best baseball PBP TV guy this city has seen.......since........exactly.

Hey, i like Kasper too but Pat's the best. I had forgotten Pat was on with Stone in 2003, largely because that was the first year of my season tickets and I pretty much lived at Wrigley that year and never remembered to bring headphones to the park.

Forgetting to bring headphones to the park in the fall of 2003? Others should have been so lucky.

I should have played the lotto. First year of season tickets and we get the best Cubs season since 1984, maybe since 1945 (and since then too).
