Besides dealing with rude ass white people . Mine is reconciling the unfortunate truth in the perception that union workers are lazy and have no incentive to do their jobs well. I see it everyday in my co workers . Habitually tardy ( :wink: ) , lots of leaving early , no incentive to do their jobs well aside from personal scruples.
Union due process protects the worst of the worst and keeps them employed when they should be shown the door .

I just transferred to a different office about 15 minutes from my house. It's totally changed my outlook on my job. I used to live a bike ride away from my old office but I dreaded going to work. I'm in a much smaller office. If there are one or 2 sick calls, everyone has to pick up the slack. The boss is very laid back and I get along with everyone. Barring a management change, I'm going to retire from this location. We are also union, BRouge. The only problem in our office is an employee who uses a ton of sick leave but it's a situation covered under FMLA so there's not a lot they can do. Everyone has accepted it.

My personal favorite was people sleeping for 8 hours...or more.

Yes there is union deadweight but there are also bosses out shopping at Lowe's or golfing during the day.

Some would expect me to say the students. But that is not true, I find them to be amusing and some are really good and want to actually learn. I tend to relate to them pretty well. My teaching evaluations show that, eventhough I have a reputation of being mean/hard my ratings are really high (that actually gives them merit, my average course GPA hovers around a 2.0 but my ratings are around 95% effective).

Instead, it is the older faculty at my campus (Read: Baby Boomers) that drive me up a wall. They believe in seniority instead of a meritocracy (so they award grants and other things to who has been on campus longest instead of who needs/deserves it) and most of the ones on my campus perpetuate the lazy professor stereotype. We have four full professors (the highest rank you can get). Three of them show up 5 minutes before the class and are out the door five minutes after their last class ends and they only teach two days a week. They bully younger (read: tenure track or contract faculty) faculty into doing the work they don't want to do. And boy do they HATE me for a variety of reasons (I got tenure and decided to keep plugging away like I did, maybe not as strong, but my foot is still on the gas pedal) and they don't like that (makes them look bad) and when one of them tried to strong arm me into relinquishing an award I won b/c they wanted to win it I told them to get fucked. So my reputation among the senior faculty is even worse then with the students (An English professor equated me with Voldemort from Harry Potter saying I'm trying to change things in a 'dangerous way to the life of an academic on our campus') and frankly, I don't care. They behave worse than my children.

Good for you Psycory.

Our daughter is teaching at a public university while finishing her PHD. She tells stories of the Department Chair adding her name to the work of others when she sees it will be published. Profs who could give a shit about teaching. She is very highly rated for the same reasons that you are.

imagine if 70% of your coworkers had FMLA like they do at my job Matt. You've seen how just one person having it in your office affects things imagine that x10. Management can't do shit about it so guess who they do come down on? The ones who don't have it but take off one more day than they're "allowed " under policy and they have formal disciplinary hearings on it. FMLA ( and its rampant abuse )is a great example of something that's grown into an ugly monster when it's meant to protect workers .

Wow. Yeah I'd disagree with that. But I'm guessing you don't work with pipefitters.

All union jobs are not created equal. I'd imagine at the end of the day if the shop foreman came around and worker A laid 500 feet of pipe ( :shock: ) and worker B 100 feet, there'd be consequences. Not so much where I work. Here , worker B would be contacting the head of the local wanting to file harassment charges against the foreman.

Worst part of my job (besides the commute) is the corporate-speak blowholes that like to hear themselves talk. Fortunately, they are in the minority, but they suck a lot of energy out of people that actually want to accomplish something.

I like my job and co-workers generally. I've been filling an open position for 28 months now and still no one on deck to be hired so that is getting really old.
I have not been given a job title, salary increase or benefits someone working that job would get so that is frustrating. I was given a bonus payment at the
18 month mark but if I were to divide that payment out over the course of time it equates to about $10 a week that I have been making for the extra job.
I have continued to work my regular job at the same time.

We could be far more profitable, but the main rainmaker at my place of employment spends much of his day fucking around on a message board.

Over the years, I've enjoyed ...

- the folks that want to either add comp/coll coverage or lower their deductible in order to then make a claim - I'm not sure which is more fun, the ones who aren't bright enough to know why that won't work beforehand, or the ones that become insolent because I flatly refuse ... perhaps the latter because I tend to remove a layer or so of my kindly veneer without much fear of repercussions;

- people who complain about a late fee when their premium is about 2-3 weeks late ... not the ones that have a real reason or aren't otherwise problem children ... the ones that are arsed to have to pay for insurance coverage on a timely basis;

- people who don't understand why their insurance premium went up (a) by a few dollars more than last year (because we all know we can count on things being cheaper every year, just like gas, milk, flour, electricity, etc), or (b) because they plowed full-speed against a red into a busload of nuns and kittens ... the latter not unlike that dumb Caller Bob in the Liberty Mutual commercial ... actually while we're here put me down for DBOTW nomination for Liberty Mutual for their shit commercials and maybe any idiot who thinks they make a good point.

Basically, Randall got it right in Clerks ... this job would be great if it wasn't for the fucking customers.

we would probably get along great

my problem is i start a new career, try a few different positions or companies, then find i hate the industry and start over in a different one. its like every 3-5 years i change what im doing entirely because i get bored. im sick of electrical work, i hate retail/customer service, get way too pissed off when working on cars, bored to death in an office... at this point im just trying to find a job that will pay enough extra money to start launching my own products. i have enough experience now to design and bring stuff to market, but funding is always the issue. i know at some point i will land it though, i will get something out there that sells and i can quit worrying about making a weekly paycheck. yes, right now is the lights. i just need $20k to get the tooling and first batch of 100 made :? i dont have the connections to make a good kickstarter video either, im terrible at that sort of stuff but i plan on finding some college kids in the industry that want to help on a gamble that we get funded.

not that i would apply for this job even if it was $20/hr, but anyone that has all those responsibilities should be making at least $15/hr with bennies. im sure they are a small company and all, but you cant expect someone to run your office for a non-living wage. maybe theyll find some mexican to do it for $10/hr cash :roll:
