What did you do for your kid when they began driving?

Buy them a car and pay for everything, car/payments, insurance, gas?

Buy them the car and have them pay for insurance and gas?

Some kind of deal where you and the kid pay for a portion of each?

Just kinda curious since my oldest is going to be 16 in a couple weeks.

1) They get to start with the worst car of the family fleet.

2) Insurance is the necessary parent-paid evil.

3) A little gas money here-and-there; otherwise, they earn it.

4) Make them a deal to split the cost of a used car after they have shown they can be responsible.

When I was 16 I bought my own car with my own cash. I had to pay for my own insurance and gas. I'm pretty sure my parents didn't want me to have the damn car.

I bought the car in Spring of 1980, by July I had burned up the clutch. It was a $500 repair. My dad was running a bank. He wouldn't give me the money. He made me come in and take out a $500 installment loan. He had one of his underlings give me a rough ride during the application process, but I knew the whole thing was arranged. I think the payments were like $50 a month for a year. I made those fuckin' payments like clockwork. After eight months the old man told me he had paid off the balance. That was cool. Now I had a credit history. I got my first VISA when I was 17. My dad wasn't too happy about that. He probably wished he had just loaned me the dough himself.

That was basically my deal. Got a gas card when I drove downstate or something, but other than that...sounds like solid rules.

I would make a kid take a class, basic mechanic stuff, too....hell I would take one now!

You should at least be able to change a tire. I'm surprised at how many people can't do such a simple task. My wife and I got a flat on the way to Indianapolis last year. She wanted to call AAA. She couldn't believe it when I changed the tire in ten minutes. Of course, then she was afraid of driving on the little spare. I had to tell her that once when I was broke I used one of those for three months.

Well, I was just over the state line, where there were also tons of rules, but mostly it was just a function of my laziness: I couldn't take classroom driver's ed after school because I had extracurriculars most of the year (or wanted to get home and watch Jeopardy), and I wasn't going to take it before school at 6 in the fucking morning, either. Also, I didn't even turn 16 till December of my junior year, and I lived close enough to my high school that walking to school got me to the door faster than driving down the street and jockeying for one of the precious few parking spaces we had at the time. But mostly just lazy.

I worked and bought my own car and paid for gas and insurance. I think you appreciate it more and take care of it better if you earn it. I cleaned and took care of my 1988 Cutlass Ciera like it was a 1998 Cutlass. I will probably make my kids do the same.

My parents would not buy me a car. But they did pay for my insurance and all my gas and they let me drive their cars when convenient. But I had a unique situation because I was a late in life child for my parents and when I started driving they were retired and did not drive as much as other parents.

I think we are going to go maybe half on a car for my daughter and have her pay for her own insurance and gas. Just trying to make sure I think through everything because I am setting a precedent for my other daughters when they get this age.

yeah dad bought me my first car. it cost $50 was rusty as shit and didnt run. I had to fix it, pay for title, license and insurance and i think twice in my life my mom gave me $10 for gas.

if i had kids i wouldnt do that to them though. i would buy them the damn car, a decent one ($3-4k range), because im the one that brought them into this world knowing shit is gonna cost money. i would likely pay for insurance for the first year too. why not. its your fuckin kid and again its not their fault for existing. plus i would want them to have a head start. starting from rock bottom like i did made everything impossible. the only lesson i learned was to never want kids.

I had to wait six months to get my license due to not having a job to pay for insurance. I had no car but occasionally used my moms. My Senior year when they bought a new car, they gave me the shitty minivan to use instead of turning it in.

My parents bought a new car but my dad and I had to share it. They paid for ins. I paid gas and maintenance but I didn't have to. I know how to change a tire but am often not strong enough.

Women shouldnt be expected to work on cars. They dont expect me to change diapers

I saved the money to buy my first car from my step-grandparents. When I saved the blue book value (around $1000), my step-grandma gave me the car for a dollar. I paid my own insurance, repairs, and gas.

Just went thru it, I had a Nissan Xterra with 150,000 miles on it and needed something else to drive. Bought a new Ford Fusion. The ex splits the gas and the insurance on it, and he finds odds and end jobs for spending money. He also plays 3 sports and is a very good student. I am good with it. By the way, he is also my only child.

I didn't get my license until I was past 17 years old. I rode the school bus through my senior year. Parents paid the insurance
when I did drive and bought a car for my brother and I to share. I would often take him and his friend to school on my way
to community college.

I'm sure everyone will think this is bullshit, but it's the absolute truth. My grandfather was a little fellow, about 5'6". But he was built like a brick shithouse. He had no fat. It was like he was pure muscle. And that was when he was in his 70s and early 80s. I can only imagine what he might have been like in his 30s. He liked to call himself "the strongest little man in the world." I never knew where the line was drawn for "little", but wherever it was, I didn't doubt him.

Anyway, we used to have an old photograph- I wish I still had it so I could post it- of my grandfather and his brother changing a tire on a 30s Ford Roadster. My grandfather is holding one end of the car up in the air and his brother is sliding the already jacked-up jack underneath.

That's often the case when tire repair shops use impact guns with improper torque settings to fasten the bolts/lugs. Sometimes you almost have to jump on the wrench to loosen them.

My oldest will be 15 next month…I’ll be faced with this scenario very soon. I find it interesting that my son and my ex have this pre-conceived idea that I’m going to magically go buy a new car for myself when he gets his license and I’m going to just hand over the keys to my current car which is a 2008 Honda Civic.

Here’s reality…I’m not interested in buying a new car for myself or him. My ex is paid child support + maintenance as agreed…she’s not wealthy, but she is well taken care of. If she feels the need to buy him a car that’s on her. He’s entering his Sophomore year of High School….my priority is making sure he grows up to be a self-supporting, productive member of society…that starts with being a good student. He doesn’t need a car to be a good student. Assuming he takes care of his grades (which to date he really is not doing), he can use my car if he needs it when he’s with me….just as he can use his Mother’s care when he’s with her.

Cars are a nice to have for a teenager, but certainly not a need. He’ll get by just fine using mine as needed. I take great exception to he and his mother thinking he’s entitled to a car….not in my world. I’ve had to ground them on this reality already and I’m sure I’ll have to do it again once he starts driving. Now….should the day come where he wakes up and decides to exceed expectations on his only responsibility of being a good student…I might be more interested in buying a new car.
