This article and a few others provide clarity if you were a fan of those yrs. I always liked NWA and Big South wrestling better than the WWF. It was all fake but the promos were off the charts and the wrestling was just better.

I always felt that the WWF demeaned Dusty Rhodes once he attempted to transition from WCW but now i know why. I was a fan of Dusty Rhodes but he was not my favorite wrestler growing up. There were a number of wrestlers I liked better but there was a certain realness to him that was unmistakenable. I now understand where he got his cadence from also

I only knew Dusty Rhodes from WCW Saturday Night and old tapes of WWF pay-per-views, so I never really understood his relevance. Good reads lately.

It was a Scott Hall v. Larry Zsybsko pay per view match. (Boy was WCW mismanaged. Who wanted to see Larry Z wrestle at that point?)

Dusty was great on commentary. His best gift to us al,l was this Botchamania moment while at the announce table.

His feud with the 4 Horsemen was legendary. It is wear the phrase stomp a mudhole and walk it dry came from.

watched the show on WWE network on Dusty tonight that they put together. Had an interview with Ric Flair in it following his death. Very touching stuff. You could tell how much Dusty meant to Flair. One of the greatest rivalries in the history of wrestling

At the time I didn't make the connection. I knew that was Dusty Rhodes's first name but I didn't know that the NWA/WWF feud ran that deep. McMahon is one vindictive son of a bitch. Virgil was one of the most demeaned wrestling characters of all time. There were all types of undertones and stereotypes associated with his storyline.

The thing that separated guys like Flair and Dusty from Hulk Hogan was that they didn't mind getting guys over. They would job out in order to advance the career of other wrestlers. There are a lot of guys that would not have done that.

Agree completely. That is one of the things that I loved about the mid 80s NWA. They had a ton of great wrestlers and everyone seemed to be on the same page and wanted to put on the best show and make the most money together.

Flair, Dusty, Tully, Arn, Ole, Road Warriors, Midnight Express, RR Express, Magnum, Nikita, Windham...

Probably still my favorite time in wrestling.

mine too. The 1980's NWA was my favorite time in wrestling also. Great matches and shows. I could never quite get with the WWF. I would watch but it never moved me like the NWA. The wrestling was sub par. Too Hulk centric also.

I used to like mid South wrestling also. Once they merged with the NWA during the mid 80's it was probably the best collection of wrestlers ever assembled. That roster was a motherfucker

There is no doubting McMahon's vindictiveness. The guy left millions on the table with the WCW "Invasion" just to stick it to those who were not his creations.

As for the undertones and stereotypes, there's also no doubting those as well. Growing up I noticed the Samoan wrestlers were always wild and savage. Sometimes they had trouble even speaking. You had the Virgil character which you dressed. Tony Atlas became Samba Simba which was cringeworthy, especially for anyone who remembered him as Tony Atlas just a few years prior.

He loves the idea of what he thinks are Hillbillies and backwoods folk. He's been pushing those types of "characters" for over 30 years now. How about the Mexicools? He literally had them coming to the ring on riding lawnmowers.

Then there was Shelton Benjamin. One of the best in ring workers at the time, so what does Vince do? He gives him a stereotypical "Mama" in an effort to get over. Can't forget making Kanyon dress up as Boy George and singing "Do you really want to hurt me?" while coming out of a box.

And of course there was the whole Booker T. fiasco. Vince called him a troglodyte and then HHH continuously buried the guy all while referring to him and his wife Sharmell as "you people."

One only has to look at the whole Bill Demott situation down in Florida. You can only get away with that type of behavior if the people at the very top are okay with it.

I know with all the money WWE is is making and worth I keep wondering why Jackson and Sharpton have not done the usual shakedown routines already unless they are being paid off under the table all silent like. There are some real brutal and offensive black stereotypes the E constantly uses.
