Not an exaggeration when I say that from the time i was old enough to bike to the park, there wasn't a day during summer break ( barring rain) that I didn't meet up with my friends and play lob with a league ball or fast pitch with a rubber ball ( Eagle flybacks ftw!!) in the school parking lot starting at 10 am. When the playground field house opened at 3 and shagged us out of there we played basketball there until dinner. I cant count the times id go the the schoolyard and practice pitching against the wall by myself. This plus our organized pee wee, little and then pony league games were all we knew growing up. Now its video games and "structured " play. Get off my lawn dammit!!

Agree with BR....Now I watch my Nephew own his Townhouse development. he is comfy in his surroundings and doesnt like leaving...literally.

I am 100% sure by 3rd grade, I could use the phone and organize a game with my friends. Now it is up to mom to make a playdate and no moms organize any lob ball games.

We did the same thing. Do your chores and play ball all day.

Structured play has definitely hurt kids. Playing on a parent coached travel team has been problematic far too many times. The biggest problem is that the kids were not allowed to make decisions for themselves while playing in house, and now when they are trying to do it in travel, the parents expect them to do things that they are unprepared for.

You would probably get kicked out of school now if you were caught spray painting the strike zone on the wall for fast pitch.

We did the exact same thing. Played fast pitch or lob league on the playground side of Hurley and played *gasp* tackle football on the other side where the grass was.

Or you would be classified as destructive and depressed and referred to a psychiatrist from the school district.

Here's the baseball softball league schedule:
under 6 t ball
under 8 underhand pitch
under 10 traveling - competitive

My daughter (8) broke her arm one week into softball this year, next year she is supposed to be on the traveling team. She will not be playing as she lost a year of training. Plus she's rather play soccer (shows some ability which means on the competitive under 10 traveling team, she will play, under 10 traveling softball, she will not).

Traveling for children under 10 is silly, however around here it is understandable as we are in a sparsely populated area.

The good news is that my kids aren't video gamers yet, so they still want to play outside, but in my neighborhood (7or 8 girls around my kids age) they don't want to play softball. Too hard to play 3 on 3 or 4 on 4. They would rather play soccer or basketball or just go ride bikes or electric scooters.

Same here. It was all baseball all the time. Wiffle ball, lob, fast pitch, against the wall, etc...all organized on our own. Meet at maple park and pick teams.

There are no diamonds in our neighborhood. Many of the diamonds in other places are restricted for non league use. No doubt that the average child does not like playing baseball.

Travel baseball is for kids that are talented and sick of the in house nonsense. The level of talent on in house teams is poor. You are lucky to have three decent players out of 12. Half of the kids can't pitch, hit, or field. It is clear that many of the parents never practice with their children. In contrast, most travel players are entusiastic and work at getting better.

Our local little league required travel players to also play in house as to avoid depriving the in house teams of the top players. After two years of frustration with in house, we joined a club travel team to avoid in house play. It was the best decision. We play in six tournaments a year and also have league play. It averages about 60 games a season. We have off season training from January to March. In season, we practice on our open days. If you love baseball, this is the way to go.

He has mentioned in the past that Holly Saunders is the rack of the future. I guess we are in the present.

He should've turned into the skid and remarked that a question about outfits to a male athlete was progressive.

real. smart. guy. Degrees, Mensa menbership. And merely douchey-looking as opposed to troll/creepy. That has to eat at Berns, or anyone. But let's focus on Dan Bernstein and not our own inadequacies, phew that was close.
