BRogue bringing it up.

No kids play any sandlot or unorganized sports.

The death of the sandlot game.....and I know all the sandlots have been developed....so find a field.

Cant even find a picture of the balls we used. Rubber, but was painted white. They were like 49 cents, we would buy a case as they lasted about a game.

Would play at Romona School in Wilmette, and used the Regina parking lot fence as the HR fence, and as we got older, we just moved out home plate back each year. Actually became a nice way to meet some of the lovely ladies of Regina. Oh, if I knew then what I know now...that whole girl school thing...wow...made it much easier for a stumbling HS kid to have some fun...

Pitcher's hand out. Right field was an automatic out. Used to play near my grade school in Midlothian. All damn day. Great memories. Fast pitch against the same grade school wall with a strike zone that was outlined with spray paint.

When we moved to the western burbs, we still played Lob Ball but we also played wiffle ball. Our neighbor had a deck on their 2nd floor. We called the red wood fence that faced our house and protected the deck The Red Monster. It was a cool setup.

FAST PITCH!!! Not Wall Ball..... Nice! Had to upgrade the ball as we got older as those cheapies started busting up too quick, but the harder ball caused a few broken windows at Regina....that was a badge to wear!

Yep Willow school in Homewood, had three backstops for lob and outside the gym had a perfect fast pitch wall.
Got suspended cause we lost all our balls on the roof so stupid me climbed up a tree to the roof to retrieve.
Almost didn't get to go see the opening of Star Wars
Man I'm fucking old.

When we got older we used what we called a "rubber coated" ball. Harder on outside but not a league.

Nice call on rubber coated. That's exactly what we called it. I hadn't heard that term in YEARS.

I was still playing "Fast Pitch" in my early 20's with a guy from work at a Park Ridge grammar school.
(I think it was Cooper school off of Seely & Algonquin)

Grew up playing that & "pinners". Pinners consisted of one guy hitting a rubber ball off a curb or the edge of a building while one guy fields.

My buddy and I played fast pitch wall ball with a tennis ball as a yute. I think I screwed my shoulder up doing that. Anytime I throw a ball, I have constant shoulder pain.

I'm old too.

The hard rubber coated balls ( like the ones in batting cages) would fuck you up bad on a high chopper if you let it bounce the 3rd time before fielding it. That fucker would kick and skip fast on that 3rd bounce especially on a hard surface. I ole'd quite a few of those in my day.

Yeah, that was a great game.

In grade School We'd play in a lot across the street from St. Theresa. Eventually, they locked it up, but by then I was in HS. It was a nice, somewhat narrow lot.

By my cousin's house, we'd play on the corner, but they used a softball. We Also play @ one of the parking lots after the neighbors chased us out from the corner.

We played in my neighbor's yard, which was sweet. The property wasn't wide, but it was deep. You had to get a hold of one to hit it over the fence in left field, which divided his yard, and the gravel lot, where school buses parked. Right field (a corn field) was out. We were all right-handed, so it was cool.

We played every sunny day from morning until dark.

We also played this in the alley against the garage. Bounce it off the ground, then the garage. A HR was a ball that landed in the yard across the alley. I recall one day when the Spilotro brothers paid me to fetch baseballs while they played this with all of the top mobsters in the Chicago area.

Growing up around Grand and Avers,we had an empty car lot we played in for years. It had these giant light poles. So anything over the poles was a HR. It was the perfect place for fastpitch.

Wasn't Smith park near there? We played in a really good floor hockey league there.

My dad always told me that lob and/or wiffle ball would ruin the timing of my swing. I didn't care, though. Those days playing either were so fun. Plus, I didn't need any help ruining my swing. It wasn't very good to begin with.

Did you ever play in the floor hockey league at Clemente? I played on a team with a bunch of little Puerto Ricans. Every other team was full of big suburban hammerheads. It was my job to keep them from the front of the net. It didn't really work out too well.

Also, in Evanston the game Fast Pitch was often referred to as "Strikeout", especially by the brothers.
