problem is that he has now further opened up the speculation about what else he did....?

Pete managed the Reds in 1989, they won 59 games!

You dont think one night he called someone he might have owed $10K to and said..."Hey, Browning cant go tonight...not releasing it until 4 PM, take me back down to Zero OK?"

He isn't going in as a manager. Who cares?

We know he has 4,200 hits. We know he gambled as a player and as a manager. We don't know that he bet his teams to lose.

wdelaney - if you think he should be elected as a Hall of Famer posthumously, it means you think he is a Hall of Famer. You're just trying to spite him by him not getting to live through the ceremony. Sorta dumb.

This right here is why he can't go in.

And this didnt have to be done AS A MANAGER...as some think....for sure he did this stuff, its why Bookies get guys like NBA refs and Tennis Players into debt....they then get favors...

You would have to have a child's mind to believe he did everything related to gambling, cheating, and fucking people except lose a game on purpose.

Thanks, Rod. Good explanations.
I really never believed that Rose did anything to affect the outcome of a game.
Now, I believe he did.
It has been written about the many times he was allowed to walk away from a big debt by the people he owed huge amounts of money to. Even though that makes him a first-class asshole on its own, there has to be more.
The supposed reason was that the gambling rings let him walk because he always kept making partial payments and they knew he'd just run up his tab again.
No way! He had to be doing something for them in order for them to let him be loose with his payments

You know the first thing he thought of each time he knew inside info....'HOW CAN I MAKE MONEY OFF THIS'

These "Investigations" are just from a Notebook they found....I would guess there is plenty more info somewhere....Like "CREDITS TO PETE*"

*Pete the manager or Pete the player

he has a serious problem....really serious....got to talk with him in Vegas, for like 30 minutes. A Bar owner in chicago has become decent friends with the guy, but I can tell you, the guy bets on every race, every chance, every minute. he is addicted to action...and when an edge exists, he is jumping on it.

There's plenty of proof. Dowd knows it. He wants this guy to shut up and preserve what legacy he has left, but Rose won't cooperate. This is a black eye for baseball. I don't know why anyone would believe he didn't. He insisted for years he never bet a baseball game at all. Then he never bet a Reds game. Now he never bet against himself. That's the biggest lie of all. Betting against is the easiest way to win and some bad guys had him over a barrel. It isn't hard to figure out.

If they ever come up with evidence showing that Rose manufactured outcomes of games he played or managed in, would you be willing to say he shouldn't get into the Hall no matter how many hits he has?

ALL. TIME. HITS. LEADER. He played BIG. BOY. BASEBALL.

I gurandamntee that he's not the only player that's bet on baseball in his life. He just got caught and has been an asshat about it so various baseball purists have refused to budge on his case.

He manufactured a lot of wins with a lot of hits. If he manufactured losses on purpose, then he is pretty terrible at it. Or we're saying he left even more hits on the table, which is even more amazing.

Pete Rose is a Hall of Fame baseball player. Period. MLB and the Hall of Fame can pretend morals come into it, but if they're going to stick to their guns, they better kick a bunch of guys out.

The only other way you walk away from big debts is if someone dies.

Rose has told enough lies that only people that live in a fantasy world would believe anything that he says anymore.

All he had to do is not bet on some games to let everybody know what he thinks of the Reds' chances on those nights.

The Reds could have won 90 games, but if they went 25-40 ATS in games where Rose didn't bet, the house would be cleaning up.

Would Petes signature and appearances be worth as much if he was just in the HOF with no issues?

He can essentially make $5K in a couple hours if he wishes by signing stuff like this. I figure he can do 3 balls a minute. He gets about $50 a ball from wholesalers, so 2 hours...and he can do this on his couch.

shoeless joe may not have been as involved as was previously thought. apparently "eight men out" had some stuff that may have been inaccurate. and he still played baseball even when he was "out".

You know, I used to think "It's been so long fuck it let him in" but I think I understand the counter argument better and it makes more sense to me now.
Sure he is the all time hits leader.
But he did tremendous damage to the game.

I have seen him sitting at his folding table in Ceasar's multiple times. I'm sure you have too. He's usually alone, maybe one person there talking to him.
And the signatures are quite a bit more than $50. Otherwise, I would probably get one.

plus can you imagine how many articles would be dedicated to that on deadspin? "how could they let this guy in the HOF?" ad nausea.

he charges $120 at his store, but I meant when a wholesaler gives him $5000 to sign 100 baseballs so they can sell them. They are at about 50% discount for him. They ship a crate of baseballs to him and a sharpie. Hang out in your LR, dont have to take to any pain in the ass fans, can make your money on the couch....while giving it to the bookie.

Saw him at MGM in the Book, wearing the wifebeater T , a Reds hat and had every racing form around out there.
