Uh oh...

You asked if he was bad over a 9 game stretch where he was 0-2 (.000) with seven no decisions.

Should we ignore what that mixture of mediocrities did to the mighty Dodger offense in the same games?

Did Greinke pitch better than Hammel last night?

True, but each of them pitched well enough not to take a loss. (Obviously. Neither one allowed any runs.)

If a guy's career was a never ending series of 9 game stretches in which he went 0-2 with 7 no decisions, I doubt anyone would argue that he was good.

agreed.

W/L has its place but it's losing its effectiveness as state since it's becoming commonplace for bouquets to be thrown for going 6.

I disagree. As we saw last night, said pitcher could be sporting a sub 2.00 era in this example and not have any wins. Over a long enough stretch, he would not only be good, but the one of the best pitchers of all time.

No. If a 2.00 ERA loses or gets a no decision every game, then a 2.00 is average at best and probably less than average.

What you're saying is really not much different than saying Jay Cutler is a better passer than Johnny Unitas because he throws for more yards.

ERA is directly related to runs (points).

Yards is not.

Oh goody, the argument over the mostly false merits of an essentially obsolete stat again.

Every stat has false merits, doesn't it? 2014 K/BB ratio fooled you (and Rick Hahn) into the bad belief that Jeff Samardjiza was a far better pitcher than he is.

False Equivalency doesn't bestow validity.

I think another good example of JORRs point is our very own Jose Quintana. Based on his measurables he's a pretty decent pitcher. His career won loss is 27-36. Big enough sample size to start seeing whats going on with him. So is he just the unluckiest pitcher in baseball 4 years running ( no run support ) or does he just manage to give up enough runs to lose the majority of his games?

No wonder he's a career underachiever . He's actually a first baseman!!

Yeah, if it was just 15 starts this season on a team that can't seem to string two hits together, we can take that relatively small sample for what it's worth and we might expect him to find better results in different circumstances.

I think it's safe to say Hendricks isn't the same pitcher this year. Seems as though the league has a pretty good gameplan against the right this season. Hopefully he and Bosio can re-adjust.

With his struggles and the uncertainty from the 5th spot in the rotation, there's no doubt we're going to need to acquire some solid starting pitching if we want to have a realistic shot at the post-season. In a perfect world you can get Hammels. However, with McFAIL taking over any day now down in Philly who knows what they'll do trade wise.

This is a game Baldy McShithead needs to come out firing darts. After 3 days in Chicago maybe the Doyerzzz players can't wait to bounce this rainy shithole of a city and play flat?

I guess the question is whether an underperforming Lester will make it more likely or less likely that they go after Price. On one hand, he would be needed more than ever--but if Lester is a bust (following bust out Edwin Jackson), Ricketts won't (or shouldn't) trust Theo to commit $200 million to another pitcher.

Well, the Cubs should be able to get to Frias. Hopefully Lester does not give up any more.

WTF? Now Bryant is out of the game?

Man, it's been a bad day so far. Should at least be interesting to see Coghlan try and play 2nd for the rest of the afternoon.

It might be time for someone to talk to Bryant about late nights before a day game. This at least his 2nd time leaving because of the "flu"
