For the first time in my life, I think the Cubs are legit, I think they are going to be good, and be good for a long time. I don't think they will win the World Series this year, I still believe in the age old crusty baseball man bullshit that teams have to learn to win, but I think the Cubs are close, and I think after all those terrible years of the Cubs being terrible and tanking, I think its going to pay off.

And its going to pay off big.

What don't they have? Other than another frontline starting pitcher, (Hello Cole Hamels?), I think they Cubs, for the first time ever and I go back to Rick Reuschel, Mike Krukow, funny story about Mike Krukow, I went to a Cubs game in my youth and the back door to the warning track was open and a couple Cubs players, I think it was Mike Tyson and Dick Tidrow were playing catch and throwing balls to fans brave enough to step on the track, I went and Tidrow, I vividly remember that moustache, threw me a ball and smiled and Mike Krukow was doing laps on the track, came up to what was a bunch of kids and told us to get the hell out of there before he tells someone, fucking prick, and Ivan Dejesus, I know bad Cubs teams.

We are going to be good, convince me otherwise beyond the garbage "its the Cubs" excuses.

They're on the upswing. I have a hard time believing Hammel can keep it up. Plus if you have to keep winning in your last at bat, then you are winning by a thread. But the team has shown a lot of moxy to keep fighting in games and being able to find a way.

The good news is there is a reason to watch the Cubs. As a guy who loves baseball, it is pure joy to see winning (competitive) baseball in Chicago. Rizzo is a thing.

As far as this season only I think they have to return to earth in a sense. As Denis mentioned the one run game luck may wear off and the pitching barring an acquisition is doomed to break your heart.

They are good. They're playing with an effective lucky rabbit's foot. They will make the playoffs.

Playoff depth sits with how they handle the trade market.

I'm casually monitoring with curiosity.

Their hitters are starting to remind me a bit of the 1972 Dodgers, with waves of youth - that team had guys like Lopes, Paciorek, Cey, and Joe Ferguson as cup of coffee guys, along with Garvey, Russell, Valentine, Buckner, and Willie Crawford in various roles. Nine guys, and only Lopes was older than 25. But the Dodgers' pitching was veteran and stellar even for the era, with Sutton, John, Osteen, Downing, and Singer as a rotation.

I think this year's team will eventually fade but still may limp into the second wild card if the Mets keep on sucking on the road. But I think that September roster is going to be mighty interesting, with Schwarber up, Vogelbach quite possibly up as a PH if they're still in the mix, and a few of the younger pitchers like Edwards who will be able to help shorten up the #4/#5 starters' expectations.

Hammel worries me if they do make the playoffs. I think he was yanked from Oakland's staff last year. Still short a starter and the bullpen is spotty. They are showing a lot of heart this year. Nice to watch the Cubs again. Still a little too young which is nice as a Cubs fan.

When you consider they've now beaten both Kershaw and Greinke with a lineup where a third of the hitters are virtually automatic outs, it gives one hope.

I would feel really confident in this team if they could get another number one or a solid number 2. The one game playoff is a crap shoot for sure and I'd feel more confident with Arrieta starting over Lester right now combined with the fact Montero's bat would be in the lineup over Ross. Soler missing all this time kinda hurts his progress as well. This team has something special alright.

Rizzo has turned out to be a GREAT HITTER. Works at it, does what he needs to do, if its a slap hit, oppo ducksnort, doesnt matter...combine it with pure power...almost GRACE like, but without the doubles...

I love what I'm seeing from this team. They do have some holes that I'm worried about, but for now, I'm enjoying this greatly. I agree with Chris, they need another top starter. I'm not giving up lots of prospects though, unless the pitcher is locked in for the following season. I would love a upgrade in LF. I do worry about the kids getting tired come September.

I am not worried. This isn't a one year project. This is (hopefully) the beginning of the Plan. That means solid drafting, player development, selected free agents acquisitions, monetization of Wrigley, better management of player contracts, etc. I view this as the start of the franchise being competitive year in and year out because of good long term planning.

Who are these great players drafted outside of the top 10?

Theo's free agent acquisitions have not been very good. His best work has been in trades.

The monetization end of Wrigley has been managed poorly. Poor management has cost them tens of millions of dollars.

Yep, just get a top pitcher off the top pitcher tree and everything is good.

It is better to win one run games than to lost them but I look at the high win percentage in those games as an indication of a lucky season rather than the identification of the beginning of something. Obviously it is a different sport but the Panthers were great in close games in 2013. I expected a return to average in those situations in 2014, which did happen.

ya, extra innings and one-run wins aren't a sustainable occurrence.

they have an orioles vibe where they're somehow getting enough pitching combined with home runs to win close games.

balt got two cracks at the postseason with that formula so let's see what happens.

Such that we shouldn't even be able to talk about "monetizing" with this team anymore while keeping a straight face.
