Even my nephew who is a absolute middle of the road player. Reliable, but not a star in anyway, doesnt even go until next month due to travel games and I am sure they play the Welles Park team....

At the same time, I think Travel is a complete joke for kids that age. That is 100% the parents making their kids to be on some path to stardom. Play 1 game a week in House league and practice 2 or 3 days a week. Much better for developing a player. Look at the number of Major leaguers who say they had or had access to a cage, thats what they need ...reps...not to drive 3 hours for 4 abs..

Id agree but I think more games (in house) less practice (the game functions as practice because its hard to simulate game speed)

Just my opinion, but in a perfect world, I think 11-12 is a good time to start travel. 6-10 should be about learning how to play, learning sportsmanship and all the intangibles and playing against local friends etc

By 11-12ish, the kids who want to keep playing and get semi-serious about it have sorted themselves out.

But ya gotta get a jump on those lazy fucks, so start YOUR kid at 8

Standing around in the outfield with nothing to do. Especially at ages under 12 or so.

Great point.

8 year olds who barely want to be out there to begin with dont really fall in love with standing in RF while kids swing and miss for 20 mins at a time.

Travel baseball is for kids that are talented and sick of the in house nonsense. The level of talent on in house teams is poor. You are lucky to have three decent players out of 12. Half of the kids can't pitch, hit, or field. It is clear that many of the parents never practice with their children. In contrast, most travel players are entusiastic and work at getting better.

What ages are you talking about? Give me some context? At what age are you expecting the majority of the players to be skilled?

We would set up anything we could find as bases. Shirts, frisbees, whatever. Use a tree, or some other landmark, as a foul pole.

There is no where to play hard ball period in my neighborhood. We have to drive to get to a school or diamond. The kids would play with a tennis ball or rubber ball, but now they're teenagers and it doesn't work. Even if there was, kids would rarely play.

Kids start giving up on baseball around 10. There is a significant funnel effect with each passing year. My son plays 13U travel (7th and 8th graders), and by then, you are down to less than 5% of kids. By way of an example, his grade has about 30 kids, and he is the only one playing baseball.

When he started out a typical in house league would be composed of about 16 teams of 12 (8 years old). By the time you get to Majors, you are down to about 10 teams, and that division covers 10, 11, and 12 year olds. Past 12, (intermediate), you are lucky to have three in house teams as most kids migrate to travel or disappear.

Only three guys, running bases. You get to six, everyone but the batter fields. You get two teams, then pitcher's hand and right field out. Yeah we adapted to the number of guys willing to play. These days, the kids play basketball and hockey or video games.

My 5 year old nephew is on a house team and was "recruited" via the house team tryout to be on a travel team as well. "Travel" in that they play other "All-Star" teams in the area. He absolutely loves it. But, I think it's too much. 2-3 baseball games a week and practice 2-3 nights a week. There's nothing left of your summer.

You have to really love baseball to do travel. We have already had 40+ games this year and will end up over 60. You need to practice on days you don't play, if you are serious about being competitive. Too much for a 5 year old, but perfect for a teenager who would otherwise be playing video games, watching tv, or sitting on an iPad. When school is out, there is a lot of dead time for kids, and baseball is a good way to fill it.

whatever happened to wall ball/fast pitch? Every school used to have a rectangle painted on its wall.

most neighborhoods had a ball diamond you could get on. we would play on ours unless there was parkboard practice or something. Today they are slowly going away. i remember that i would get home from a baseball game and head out to meet my buds and play more baseball. its not like that anymore. most fields are "designated for league use only" and the ones that aren't are completely empty. you don't see kids just playing ball anymore on public fields. at least around here.

Dolphin, fast pitch was discussed earlier. Anyway, I think the biggest issue is getting enough kids together for a variety of reasons.

Organized soccer has also kinda killed baseball. Pretty much anyone with legs can be decent in soccer at a young age.

We had soccer leagues when I was a kid in the 80s but they were just blowing up. I think those that grew up in the 70s and prior were more likely to play baseball because it was THE organized sport.

I'm still waiting for confirmation on Rogowin being Bernstein's source.

Had a few pops with Rogowin...not sure there is a connection there of personality. Rogowin is in that McDough & Blunk inner circle, just dont see him risking his career to give Dan any info.

Just because the victim doesn't want to put themselves through the strain of a lawsuit doesn't mean Lil Danny is innocent.

I'd say with the way the ratings are going, Lil' Danny may have already lost the case without the other side spending a penny on an atty.

heh, that'd be a good WYC. Did you know Dan that only 2% of libel allegations result in damages? There is NO EVIDENCE of a high amount of false claims.

Patrick Sharp said he was considering filing a lawsuit against people for "false" reports.

Bernstein stood up proudly and said "Good luck" and then nothing happened.

Bernstein with the win.

Yeah, the equivalent of "HOLD ME BACK", as Bernstein then proceeded to STFU about it until long after Sharp was traded.

He did not shut up about it. It was referenced plenty of times.

Sharp didn't sue after threatening to do so.

The lawsuit he feared, and the reason he STFU, wasn't from Sharp but from the really smart people at ABC. It isn't about winning or losing the suit, but getting the judge to issue the TRO to remove them from the airwaves (no, CBS wouldn't go to the mattreses for them but fold quckly). Dan would also have to be deposed on his sources, and short of a confidentiality agreement (usually done in capitulation and agreement to remove the TRO) he would be exposed as a phony and liar. The lawsuit may not have ever held up in civil court but it would have been a true victory in the court of public opinion.
