Ross' salary would be insignificant if Lester was pitching better. But at 4-5 with a 4.25 ERA, I have to wonder whether having his security blanket here makes much sense. He has had a couple game winning hits and he's a back-up catcher, so I don't see it as worthy of much discussion.

Lester has always been a slow starter and been better as the season progresses. However, after a terrible April, he went on a 4-0 run in May, with an ERA under 2. But he has followed that with 4 winless starts and sits at 4-5 with a 4.25 ERA going into tonight's game vs the Reds. I thought they overpaid for him and would not have signed him to that contract. However, I did expect him to be a great #2 starter (Arrieta is the true #1 IMO) and help a great deal. I still have those expectations, but if this winless streak goes a couple more games, I will be greatly disappointed.

Edwin Jackson should never have been signed. He was basically a .500 pitcher when the Cubs signed him, with a career 4.40 ERA. That is the kind of stuff you expect from a 4th or 5th starter you sign to a 1-2 year contract for 4-5 million a season, not a multi-year deal for 56 million. That remains (by a landslide) the dumbest move Epstein and Hoyer have made to date. I know, he's 2-1 with a 2.79 ERA in mostly mop-up duty this year, but I would release him immediately. He has no real role on the team and cannot be trusted in situations where the game is on the line.

The next big money deal....David Price

I agree. However, Price is at an age where he is more likely to be effective (if no injuries are involved) for the length of the contract than a guy like Lester, who is a bit older than ideal.

His big money signings have not been real solid. Unless Lester has an amazing 2nd half, he's not looking real great right now. He's not being paid to be this inconsistent.

Jackson was a stupid signing from day 1 and almost everyone thought that except for them.

No, actually it doesn't.

Lester is really pissing me off. Can't get past the 4th inning and taxes the bullpen......again. Loses his composure on the mound, like some rookie prima-donna. That's not how a top of a rotation starter is supposed to perform. I have said all along, that Arrieta is the true staff Ace, but I though Lester was going to be a solid #2. Instead, he's pitching like #2.
