No, Government can't be totally run like a business, but like mergers in the private sector there are huge opportunities for consolidation in Illinois, a state that is riddled with govermental bodies from townships, villages, school boards, etc.

Ford Heights is 2 square miles big and a few thousand people. The existing government failed to the point where their police department disbanded.

Of course most municipal legislators wouldn't like these ideas, because that's their livelihood. So it has to be at a state level. You'd think the corporate whisperer Rauner could spearhead such stuff, instead he's spending time lopping off a million bucks from the sick and old.

reviving an article that is 4 months old?

agree that a lot of waste could be cut a t the local level by simply having one elected board control the library, school, village, parks. efficiency would theoretically be gained on a staffing level for local government by combining. combining villages would have to be throughly looked at and not just assumed because two towns are next to each other it would work

Was it already discussed here? I don't usually dip my toe in this sub-forum.

Anyway I saw this post in the morning: http://chicagoist.com/2015/06/25/housin ... y_hope.php and googled Ford Heights and then that came up and it made me go hmmmm

We discussed this years ago! I don't think Ford Heights came up, though.

Ha! I remember this and still agree 100% about Harwood Heights/Norridge!!! I was over there a few weeks ago around Gunnison. The way the streets change twice within blocks of each other would confuse even lifelong Chicagoan's.

Edit: I meant to quote Curious Hair.

My idea was just to consolidate all of Cook County as Chicago (like Philadelphia) then secede from IL. Im surprised it didn't get any traction.

Townships make sense in Wisconsin where there's a lot of unincorporated land. The City of Lake Geneva is bounded by, clockwise from upper-left, Geneva Township (Lake Como, Geneva National), Lyons Township (Lyons, I guess), Bloomfield Township (Pell Lake), and Linn Township (the South Shore where the filthy rich live). It makes more sense than having Pell Lake, for instance, try to govern itself, because all they would do is pass laws allowing ten-year-olds to smoke in bars. Anyway, the point is that they serve a purpose there, but none in Cook County, as best I can tell.

That is why it will never end. Too much easy money to be made in this corrupt state.
