Bill Walton is a national treasure and I would gladly have a seat behind him. He'd have great stories.

...plus I think he'd share. Hell, eventhough I'm straight edge, even I would have to make an exception.

Sounded like they would be streaming these songs live on FM radio when they play in Chicago

SiriusXM will be airing the shows, and I am sure that I will be able to find more audio streams.

I had XRT on this weekend and they made it sound like they would be playing the shows but maybe they would be rebroadcast and not live.

Much better playing as well. Trey was definitely holding back on Saturday night, but he let it go a bit last night, especially during Bucket and Eyes.

They will definitely open with Jack Straw on the 4th, and I would like to see the final song on Sunday be Black Muddy River, the last song they played sung by Jerry. Bruce plays that song with his band, so he can handle the vocals.

I had college roommate in 1993 that turned me on to the Dead from tapes of live shows he collected and traded. I was familiar with a handful of their tunes, but this was the first I really had heard their live stuff and I thought it was really cool. At the same time, an old HS friend of mine insisted I go see Phish with him. He had played “Picture Of Nectar” for me and I thought it was good so I went and saw them in Tinley Park that summer. That show completely blew my mind. I was mostly into metal, but as a musician, this form of live show really was refreshing. Over the next 7 years, I saw Phish over 10 times. There were great shows and some stinkers. . I saw the OJ show in Milwaukee ’94…nothing ever came close to topping that show.

Around the time of “The Story Of the Ghost” the band just seemed (to me) to be mailing it in and I lost interest. While I liked “Farmhouse”, “undermind” came out and it was over for me. Plus…I was a new Dad and it was no longer a priority.

I still love the band and listen to my favorite shows from the 1993-1996 range, but I’ve never really been motivated to go back and see them again.

The Dead also had their peaks and valleys. The only time I saw them was in ’93 at Soldier Field and it wasn’t one of their best nights. Still love some of the old shows, though. My favorite….Gruga Halle Germany from 1981. Many prefer the early 70’s stuff…and that’s great, but that ’81 show was just amazing.

At some point I’ll give these final shows a listen…it’ll be interesting to hear how Trey blends in with the band. I’m ok with not seeing it in person. I’m sure it’s great, but not worth the money or hassle for me.

They'll be on tape delay, I think.

I remember as a kid when you could go to CD stores and check out the albums on a portable CD player. One time I saw a Grateful Dead album and thought with all the skulls and skeletons that it was a metal band. I put the CD in and it was fucking hippy music. I turned to my Dad and he must of saw I was perplexed. He then saw what album I was listening to and said "Yea, they've always had cool art but they suck." That's my story. God bless you all.

See, I always thought the Grateful Dead was some sort of trippy psychedelic thing where it was just like two hours of warped guitar feedback and stuff. I was pleasantly surprised to find out they were quite listenable and Americana-ish, though my tolerance for long jams has never been extensive.

I'm glad to hear that. I think too many people have strong opinions on them, without being familiar with their work. Their loss.

To say the very least, their reputation precedes them, as with their musical descendants. The jam band kids (as opposed to the jazz band kids, my people) were among my least favorite in high school: either rich kids who elected not to shower much, or rich kids who would elect not to shower much if not for their parents making them.

But the point is that the Grateful Dead are still pretty good.

I wasn't a rich kid, and I love to take a shower. I don't like girls with hairy armpits, and I hate patchouli.

When I meet a board member for the first time, they often say, "you don't look like I expected."

Definitely in the team photo for greatest American rock bands of all time. These final shows are some of the biggest concert events in history.

You can LEGALLY download the shows if you have a BitTorrent client. These are audience recordings.

Beware of the crazed, naked perverts wandering the streets this weekend. Keep your children indoors.

The guy I know who's going to this is an obscenely rich family/adoption-law attorney. I'm not saying he won't wander the streets naked, though; he's just that kind of guy.

It sounds like that goofy video during the policeman convention in Fear and Loathing. KNOW YOUR DOPE FIEND!
