What he's doing is simply amazing. I was gonna start this thread saying he's having the greatest pitcher season in Chicago baseball history. I would say Maddux in 92 was the best before this Sale year.

But it's MLB history.

8 straight games with 10 Ks. Ties Pedro for the record. Shocked Nolan, Roger or Randy never did it.

We suck. But it's fun to watch Sale.

True. But Nolan Ryan? He's got the strike out record by a lot. Thought he would have done 8 straight with 10. I'm not gonna look it up, but I'll bet he has like 15 out of 17 or something like that.

I know Sale won't get the strike out record for a season. Cuz they used to have 4 man rotations. But I wonder if he'll get the record for 5 man rotations. Whenever that started.

Ryan got 340 in a five man rotation facing the DH in every game.

That's amazing. Cuz in a 5 man rotation you average about 30-32 starts. So he averaged over 10 Ks per game.

I guess Sale can get the record for Strikeouts per start in a season. Or since they went longer back in the day, strikeouts per inning. He might get that one. I'm not gonna look that up. Just thinking out loud.

In 2015, Sale has 12.28 strikeouts per nine innings. Nolan Ryan's best K/9 average was 11.5 in 1986, when he went 8-16.

Career K/9
Sale 10.1
Ryan 9.5

In 2001, Randy Johnson had 13.4099 K's per 9 innings.

But you have to put it in context. Cardinal pitchers are probably going to strike out more batters in this game than Sox pitchers.

Sure. I am just listing the numbers for historical perspective.

Yeah, I'm just saying I wouldn't give Sale's strikeouts the same weight as those of the guys to whom we're comparing him.

The fascination with taking pitches may shorten games for starters but it's also resulting in a ridiculous amount of Ks.

And yet, Sale has not gotten a W in his last 5 starts.

He's having a great season, and a historic run. He should probably start the AS game.

When he first broke into the league, I never would have thought he would hold up this long, his mechanics are just so scary. Definaitely shows he has some tremendous mental makeup and drive in addition to physical skills, just wish it was not for naught with tis offense :(

He's having a really good season. I think "historic" is tossed around a little too easily these days.

Well, it IS a historic string of starts he is on. Something like only the 2nd or 3rd guy to have 10+ strikeouts in 7 or 8 consecutive starts? That is pretty damn good. I doubt it ends up being a "historic" season because he will be lucky to get 12-13 wins playing for this clown outfit, but it is incredibly nice to have something to enjoy on the Southside this season.

My point is a strikeout doesn't have the same value as it once did. There is no premium on batters avoiding a strike out. Taking pitches is now the name of the game. It seems to be getting lost on baseball's offensive geniuses that seeing all these pitches is ultimately resulting in more strikeouts while walk rates remain fairly steady. This is the real cause of the long games. To me, it's not a great product. There has to be some balance. I'm not looking for 1930s or steroid era offense. But I don't buy a ticket to watch a guy try to take a walk.

Sticking your toe in the White Sox pool, eh?

You are flirting with disaster.

JORR and I fully agree on this strikeout thing. Crazy.

That makes three of us......

KUDOS to Brooks Boyer and the Sox marketing team.... the announce teams on both TV and radio need something positive to sell... I am sure they are looking at things like "the most home runs by a Cuban with a uniform number above 70"

But seriously when guys like Adam Dunn, Joey Gallo and Javy Baez can strike out 12 times in a 3 gamer and then when you like at one of my all time favorite Sox player's Nellie Fox who struck out 24 times in two seasons (58-59) and nearly 1400 plate appearances or about twice a month you an clearly see how the game has changed over the years...

JORR is 1000% correct.....

Not to go all JORR here but who gives a shit about strikeouts at this point? This team is going no where. They're not winning with his pitching. How bad does a season have to be if we're wigging out about a guy who plays every 5 games getting double digit strikeouts and no wins and that's ALL there is to celebrate.
