http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Chicago-to-Apply-9-Netflix-Tax-134367

Netflix service in Chicago is about to get notably more expensive. On the hunt for new revenue, Chicago's Department of Finance is applying two new rules that would impact companies like Netflix and Spotify. One covers "electronically delivered amusements" and another covers "nonpossessory computer leases"; together they form a unique and troubling new attempt by cities to tax any city resident that interacts with "the cloud. According to the Chicago Tribune, streaming service providers need to start collecting the tax starting September 1.

The new tax is expected to net the city of Chicago an additional $12 million annually.

"The amusement tax applies to charges paid for the privilege to witness, view or participate in an amusement," states the city's new ruling (pdf). "This includes not only charges paid for the privilege to witness, view or participate in amusements in person but also charges paid for the privilege to witness, view or participate in amusements that are delivered electronically."

"Jurisdictions around the world, including the US, are trying to figure out ways to tax online services," a Netflix representative tells the Verge. "This is one approach."

I just cancelled Netflix after 2 months. Giving me shit content at 8.99 a month...no thanks.

Their TV shows are terrible, too. House of Cards was ok but I don't need an angst-filled Daredevil heavy on dialogue or Lily Tomlin playing a funny old hippie. Also don't need to see ugly women in prison doing gross stuff to each other.

jimmypasta only needs 2, 5, 7, and 9, the way it was meant to be! You know, when you watch Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, they don't break in to warn you that a tornado is going to fuck your shit up.

They can take everything not nailed down and it still won't make a damn bit of difference which is why this is comical to watch. The aim is to make the balance sheet look better so they can borrow more money.

You are missing the broader point and looking like a clown in the process.

What broader point? That the government is going to tax you?

Seriously who fuckin' cares you wouldnt have even noticed it. If Netflix raised their rates by a buck you'd accept it without thinking "cost'a doin bidness I s'pose", but the government does the exact same thing and suddenly its indicative of a broader, more sinister force at work?

Please.

if we get his avatar to slowly move to the right with a banjo playing in the background, we might attract some of the PBS crowd. Let's consult CH.

This tax would cost me nearly $30 a year extra. That's a lot of money.

That's more like it!

Now, that revenue generated won't be nearly enough to improve the credit rating, give leverage in pension/union negotiations or bridge the budget problems....

So what to do?

Time to "Raise Revenue!"

"Tweak" the red light camera's + add more of them = X amount of revenue
More illegible/confusing "No Parking Except...." signs = X amount of revenue
Junk Food tax that will pretty much be for all food = X amount of revenue
More "fees" for cars/bikes/housing etc = X amount of revenue
Any other fee/tax/cost you can tack on to whatever you can see = X amount of revenue
Raise existing fees/taxes/costs associated with whatever = X amount of revenue
Anything and everything else, especially if is a tax/fee/cost that a segment of the population has to use.

All hypothetical (not really) and it will mainly hit working poor/middle class but who cares. So now you have, let's say, ~$150-300 (maybe more depending on person and circumstance) per year. That's a lot for someone that isn't wealthy, isn't seeing any wage gains, now has to work 2 part time jobs and is battling with real inflation. This is bad especially when it's associated cost on top of what is already being paid. That hurts and it doesn't solve the problem, not even close.

But you can always move somewhere else....but that'll cost ya' too.

Bingo. Democrats tax and spend too much. Repubs cut taxes and spend too much. Where are the folks that understand fiscal sanity?

so the point of this is that there is an amusement tax for physical places people go to, like concerts. i get that, those are occupying actual space within the city.

but this tax is on the virtual world, which is already taxed by the delivery system (dsl, cable). even better, its only one part of the virtual world. next will be a tax every time you use google or bing as a 'resource tax'. or every time you buy porn online you need to pay a "junk food" tax. very slippery slope they are trying to pull here... in essence they could double every tax there is now because the virtual world is just that- a virtual representation of the real world.

so, in reality, someguy is somehow right. this is complete bullshit. dont let this happen chicago.

This just means everyone will hop back on their parents' accounts registered to Schaumburg, Naperville, or Michigan/Missouri/Wisconsin suburbia, making it a tax on people who aren't planning to move back out of Roscoe Village when their girlfriends pop out a kid or two.

Who's going to lead the revolt? This is a tax on people who watch too much fucking TV as it is.
