Finally, it looks like the story of "into thin air" is getting the VIP treatment. great looking cast, big production value, and will follow krakauer's story along with the IMAX film from 1998. it looks like it's going to focus mainly on scott fischer and rob hall, and krakauer will be a supporting character.

looks to be released in september.

I will be cheering for the mountain while watching this film.

Another of these non accomplishment "accomplishments" some people strive to complete.

It'll be interesting to see exactly how they'll handle the story. Looks like it will be visually amazing. I like how some of the scenes show the scope of how big the mountain is...

Well, a whole lot of people have done it. It's become a tourist industry rather than true mountaineering. And there are a lot of outfits that will take people's money even though the climber is in no way prepared. That's one of the reasons you have so many problems out there. Too many people on that mountain all at once. One slow guy backs everyone up.

I agree but it's still an accomplishment.

You have a very liberal definition of accomplishment.

It is a destination reached by thousands, including the handicapped. The only thing preventing anyone from being able to do it is money.

It's definitely an accomplishment. Getting to base camp would be an accomplishment, IMO. Crossing crevasses on lashed together ladders with crampons on would freak me the fuck out. Making it through the ice fall, surviving the altitude and cold would be insane.

Even though it's become a "tourist-ey" activity, you have to be in good shape to do it and just dealing with some of the epic exposure on some parts of that mountain would test the mental fortitude of anyone.

But the icefall aside, I'm sure a guy who uses the name Makalu G would agree that as far as mountain climbling goes, there are a lot tougher climbs than Everest. Let's just say it isn't quite the accomplishment it was back when it was undertaken by Tenzing and Hillary. Now it's an accomplishment more akin to running a marathon, albeit considerably more dangerous. And expensive.

even krakauer said there are too many people who aren't climbers climbing it because it's become almost more a tourist destination rather than a real climb.

douglas adams once remarked that it's "just a smart jog" to the top. he was a proponent of mount Kilimanjaro, which he thought was a climber's climb. i think for one thing, you actually start at the bottom. at everest, your real climb begins at base camp.

Absolutely agree. But I couldn't personally dismiss the "accomplishment" of anyone who's ever done it. Just the climb along the southeast ridge would fry my mind with the exposure and sheer massive panorama.

Just another day at the office for those badasses. I do know they take pride in reaching the summit.

There's definitely more difficult and technical climbs in the world, but that mountain ain't no joke. I've done quite a bit of reading, and even though it's an "easier" climb, it's still fucking crazy to summit Everest.

The tourist aspect is certainly a negative thing, but that's where a huge chunk of revenue comes from in that area.

oh yeah it's still a hell of a peak. the most dangerous thing about it is the fact that you have such a small window to summit. it's something like 2-3 days and even then it can change. that's what happened to these guys.

Overall I thought this was a solid retelling of the tragic story, definitely putting you right on that mountain the way that Krakauer did. But what was missing was the human touch and personal touch he put into the story he wrote. The characters of Rob Hall and Beck Weathers come off as the strongest, but Doug is written as a total throwaway and you know he's going to die almost immediately. The performances are all fine, with Jason Clarke's being the most appealing...he's quickly becoming a favorite actor of mine.

Missing out on that human touch hurts the quality of the narrative toward the end. It starts to drag because it's very drawn out once all the mess is cleared. I remember, when reading "Into Thin Air", the end was the most powerful part. Here it's between the beginning of the third act and then the final pictures of the real people (which totally haunt you).

I don't know why this story couldn't fully be brought to its potential...but I would recommend seeing this if you don't know the story. Otherwise, read "Into Thin Air" or see the IMAX documentary made.

Definitely try to see this in its optimal medium, because it will give you chills. Literally.

Reaching the summit of Everest wasn't all it was cracked up to be, GD? Did you at least get a photo and T-shirt?

What was your toughest climb?

Where did you climb your mountains, huh?

He knows how to read. And he also knows finishing an entire book doesn't prove anything.

SPOILERS BELOW : Great synopsis . Just saw it, agree on all counts. I don't know how anyone who hasn't read the book would receive the movie as many of the characters that were colored in so wonderfully in the book are just names in the movie. What happened to Andy Harris is explained so much better in the book , you never get an explanation of why he thought the oxygen bottles were empty in the movie. The members of "The Huddle" just all blend in at this part in the movie and that was one of the most important, harrowing parts of the book. The Breashears IMAX movie actually did a better job of putting you in that moment with the snowsuits, headlamps, blizzard going on. The base camp/ Rob Hall stuff was well done, pretty emotional as you would expect. I guess I never got a feeling of just how bad it was up there when things went south. With so many people to keep track of I don't know how feasible it was to make audiences familiar with them all as they needed to be. It was a well made movie just short on the necessary characteriations that made Into Thin Air such a brutally compelling read.
