Did you notice all the tryouts the Cubs had over the past 3 years? They had guys left and right who at one time were top prospects in other organizations.

Did you know Chris Coghlan was ROY? It was about finding a guy or 2, who once was the star future of an organization, might not have been ready for whatever reason and now was given a real second chance. Ryan Sweeny, Ruggiano, Scheirholtz, Kalish...all these guy were an organizations top prospects at one time and at age 25, the organizations thought they had enough chances...

Personally, I love taking a chance on that guy. The guy who wants it even more than when he was a 23 year old with a great contract and he expected to make it. You dont rely upon that guy, you just see if he can help.

you never know what's going to happen in baseball. that's what makes it interesting. take this bum Matt Davidson. looks like garbage at 24. he might pop up five years from now as a good player somewhere.

Rich Harden had a very good second half of 2008 with the Cubs. 1.77 ERA. And for JORR, he was 5-1.

His playoff appearance was extremely disappointing, but he definitely helped the Cubs get the top spot going into the playoffs.

If anything, this shows why you shouldn't go "all in" on any one season, same as last year's Athletics.

I'm not saying Hendry shouldn't have traded Donaldson at the time, but does it shock anybody that he wasn't able to evaluate his own talent? I'm not a Hendry basher, but damn, his evaluating skills were poor. Thank God his friend was running the Pirates and the Marlins were having another fire sale when he came calling.

I'm a Hendry basher.

But I'm ambivalent about the Harden / Donaldson trade. Hendry's entire M.O. was baed on that style. The Cubs organization wasn't about buiding a strong foundation.

I think that's generally a good rule of thumb, but it should probably be suspended when you haven't won in 107 years.

Then you're likely as not going to not win for 112 years.

I think it is logical to want to give yourself a good chance for 5 (or more) consecutive years than a really good chance for 1 year and then many seasons of no chance.

And, supposedly, the Cubs can maintain a strong organization and farm system that won't need to be sacrificed. Example...not trading for a second (or third) ace this month because all an ace will cost in the offseason is $$$. Unless Chris Archer is available (he isn't) there is no reason to spend prospects and money for Hamels. It isn't as if there are built in cost savings within his contract that add value.
