Average ERA was worse. So, no.

The starting staff was better. Prior and Wood won 32 games.

Anyone who watched both years knows 03 pitching was way better. I'm not sure what numbers you're looking at but you're being deceived

I'm referring to starting staff ERA. It was worse in 2003 than in 2004.

edit: I am wrong, they are very close but 2003 is slightly better. Shawn Estes effect wasn't as strong as I thought.

2003 Starters ERA = 3.69
2004 Starters ERA = 3.72

I'm still going to say 2004 since Maddux > Estes.

The 2004 starters gave the Cubs a chance to win every day. The 2003 Cubs lost every fifth day.

Except last year, of course...hopefully he will return to his Boston form.

Four Cubs pitchers in the Top 20 in NL WAR for pitchers.

They are in the Top 33 for MLB WAR for pitchers.

This is only becoming more evident. Best starting staff Cubs have had in my lifetime.

Gotta think every team in mlb has a much improved Team ERA compared to 10-11 years ago . Ped use is probably down 85% across the board.

That's a fair point. I'd like to see average league slash lines now and then. That said, this is clearly a very good pitching staff.

We aren't comparing 10 or 11 years. We were comparing 2003 to 2004. And I was wrong; about the same with 2003 having a slight edge.

But the 2015 Cubs staff is better than 2003-2004 or 2008 because of many reasons, not just ERA.
