RIP,Kenny Stabler

OAKLAND -- The Oakland Raiders confirmed late Thursday afternoon that Pro Bowl quarterback Ken "The Snake" Stabler, who led the team to a Super Bowl championship in 1977, had died Wednesday at age 69.

"The Raiders are deeply saddened by the passing of the great Ken Stabler," owner Mark Davis said in the statement. "He was a cherished member of the Raider family and personified what it means to be a Raider. He wore the Silver and Black with Pride and Poise and will continue to live in the hearts of Raider fans everywhere. Our sincerest thoughts and prayers go out to Kenny's family."

Former Coach John Madden added: "I've often said, If I had one drive to win a game to this day, and I had a quarterback to pick, I would pick Kenny. Snake was a lot cooler that I was. He was a perfect quarterback and a perfect Raider."

A family statement said that Stabler had died Wednesday as a result of complications with colon cancer.

"He passed peacefully surrounded by the people he loved most, including his three daughters and longtime partner," the statement said." Stabler had been diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in February.

At Stabler's request, his brain and spinal cord were donated to Boston University's Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Center to support research for degenerative brain disease in athletes, the family said.

"He was a kind, generous and unselfish man, never turning down an autograph request or an opportunity to help someone in need," the statement read. "A great quarterback, he was an even greater father to his three girls and grandfather to his two 'grand snakes.' "

Funeral arrangements are pending. Stabler is survived by his three daughters Kendra Stabler Moyes, Alexa and Marissa; his grandsons Jack And Justin Moyes; sister Carolyn Bishop; nephew Scott Bishop; and great nephew and niece Tayler and Payton Bishop. He is preceded in death by his father, Leroy Stabler, and mother, Sally Stabler.

I followed him on FB,never knew he was sick. I know he was proud of his grandsons and had posted their pics in football uniforms.

Ever since I was a kid "The Raida's" have been my second favorite team. The Bears were blacked out 7 out of 14 games a year. I watched a lot of the Oakland team. Some great characters with Kenny at the top, along with George Blanda,Ben Davidson, etc.

(edit: looks like his FB page was removed.)

If there was a recall, Griese is the first one out. Namath is next.

Namath first out check stats. He just happened to win first SB for AFL. Horrible. Griese won two SB in three seasons had better stats overall.

Stabler was one of my first favorites. Read his book that came out about 1988? Those Raiders and he were something else.

Took Philosophy of sports at U of AZ during summer school. Yes, it was 90% basketball and football players and the class was designed to lift GPA's (Which I needed at the time, so I got in to the class thanks to Craig McMillian, G)....the teacher was a cross country coach who was pretty geeky and was amazed at the talent and athletic ability it takes to throw a football or shoot a basketball...and we spent days on all the elements of each. I think the class was for him to do some study.

The final day of class, he tells us a story, while at the Univ of Bama, he and his Cross Country buddies are at a bar, having a beer and in walks Stabler and 4 huge guys, he assumed football players.... Stabler and group proceeded to beat the fuck out of these guys for no reason and he asked the football players to remember that and dont do it to anyone else. SNAKE RIP.

I can't even begin to guess at the money that could've been made today if 5, 10, 15 years ago one placed a bet on which Snake would die first and taking Stabler.

Which should mean that if you cannot tell the story of pro football without someone then shouldn't they be a no brainer for the hall?

If you have not ever read his book The Snake, do it. Probably the funniest, truest sports book I have ever read. Those boys like to have a LOT of fun playing for the Raiders.
