I'm beginning to come around to the idea of trading Quintana. Dave Cameron just ranked him the 41st most valuable asset in baseball, ahead of Buxton.

Yes, Chris Sale would command basically an entire farm system. Just to throw an example out there, if the Dodgers offered Seager, Urias and Joc Pederson the Sox would probably say no (and they probably should). There's maybe 5 or 6 teams in baseball who have the bullets to acquire Sale. That's part of the problem, the potential suitors are trimmed down to teams who would be reticent about dealing that much talent. Then there's the fact that Sale is, barring injury, probably going to be one of the greats and you dont just give that up.

Quintana is similar to Sale in a lot of ways. He's cheap, consistently good (Sale is consistently great, which is a difference), fairly young and locked up for a lot of years. He's also one of baseball's more durable starters, which is a big deal. You could get a shitload for Quintana right now. Aside from Correa, Quintana could get any prospect or rookie in the game in exchange. Maybe that's what needs to be done. Sacrifice having the top 3 spots in the rotation set until 2020 to bring some serious position player talent.

The Sox should probably say yes.

No, they shouldn't. A Chris Sale type talent comes around about one every 5-10 years and usually winds up getting $200m+ before he even hits arbitration. The fact that he's locked up until 2021 (right through the heart of his prime) for a total of $54m makes him possibly the most valuable player in the game since Trout got his giant contract.

It's almost impossible to determine what his value is because of that contract.

I understand that. Pitchers get hurt very easily and that is a lot of young major league talent. Some have already had some success.

...and Chris Sale is a rare case of the best-case scenario for young talent. Most of these great young stars in the game will wind up being ballplayers. Make a few ASG's, get a few MVP votes here and there but maybe one will wind up even sniffing the Hall of Fame. Do you take the risk hoping you get that one guy in exchange for Sale? I dont think so.

I don't want the Sox to trade Sale but they have a lot of good to great young arms. If you're trying to turn it around right away trading him would be your best bet. The Sox have 1 legitimate bat and he's 30.

Grote was with Mully this morning and actually thought the Sox could get one of the Cubs top prospects. He said they should be able to get Kyle Schwarber,or Addison Russell.   This idiot claims to be a Sox fan, but doesn't remember the Sox only gave up seimen for Shark. No way in hell the Cubs give up a top prospect.

That doesn't seem likely. In fact, that seems to be completely unrealistic to get either Schwarber or Russell in any deal.

If the Cubs are down on Baez, maybe there's a chance there, but it's hard to see the Cubs giving up a ton for a impending free agent. I think they'd want to know he's going to be on the team for the future, which he won't commit to.

Gordon Whitenmeyer thought the Cubs could get Samardizija for Alcantara and Olt. Even the Cub loving guys at Hit and Run laughed at this.

Is Alcantara still considered to be a good prospect? If so, I do wonder if the White Sox could get more than one good prospect, and not a blue chip. Olt is a fringe major league talent.

I wouldn't rule out a return that is less than overwhelming though.

It's tough to trade Quintana AND compete at the same time. The White Sox would have to get back two top 50 prospects, at least for him.

I don't that's crazy. Quintana has become a legitimate #2 starter, and has done so over a few seasons. He is locked into a team friendly deal as well.

The White Sox would be crazy to consider a deal for anything less.

No one would have guessed Oakland's move last year. Desperation is always a possibility.

That was for 2 pitchers as well.

Quintana is not a legit #2 starter.

You aren't paying attention if you don't know the quality of his work over the past three seasons.

If you are a person who dismisses W/L as a stat, Quintana is a top 25 or so pitcher. Now add that he is lefty, young and secured for a long period at an incredibly favorable contract.

I gave you the benefit of the doubt in the above post but you doubled down on it. Pay attention to baseball.

Acquire Quintana in a trade for two top 50 prospects and he will be the best player in that trade over the next five years.

The White Sox would never trade Quintana. Their whole plan revolves around finding young pitching and keeping them around while they are still cheap. They've done this for years. Remember when they kept McDowell in the minors for that extra year just so they could keep him locked up for another year?

Ok well I guess I shall wait for this to happen and we can see. What top 50 prospects do you hope the Sox get in return for him?

He isn't even the real #2 starter on the last place Sox

Quintana would be one of the better number 4 guys in the game. Anyone who thinks he's more than that is kidding themselves.

plenty of people already say that

Joe places heavy value on wins. I understand his point. His analysis wouldn't place Quintana as a #2.

Just about every other metric does.

Quintana is the #2 , the pitching isn't the reason the Sox suck. I'd take Quintana over Lester .

Ideally, the Sox rotation is Sale at 1, Quintana at 3.
Quintana is very good, but he's a #3 starter.

The Sox have (2) young, inexpensive LH Starting pitchers...one who is flat out dominant. You do not trade either one of them. Figure it out else where.

The real problem with the Sox lineup is Beckham, Flowers, Alexei. This year is not happening with those three offensive turds.

Quintana's salary is lower than Lester's, true, but he will never be the pitcher Lester already has been and right now he isn't better than Lester. Of course, Lester's salary may be ugly at the back of his current contract, but Quintana is nothing more than an innings eater signed to a team friendly deal. He isn't winning you a damn thing. If you can have him go out every fifth day and his team wins half of those starts, that's as good as you can expect from him. But if you think he's the number two or three guy in your rotation, enjoy your high draft pick next season.

Thank you for listening to our weekly version of Bad Baseball Thoughts with JORR. Next week he'll tell us why infield defense is overrated!
