8, plus whatever states you'd hit driving from here to Boston. I was two, and the Seventies were a crazy time. Also, possibly Iowa, as the Nineties were a crazy time as well.

Asterisks for states where I have lived.

I've had layovers in Philadelphia and Charlotte, but you can't say you've been to a state until you've 1) left the airport and 2) taken a leak. Everyone knows this.

We did a lot of car traveling in my youth and since I've had kids. I'm like Clark Griswold where I will stop to see the biggest ball of yarn.

Added Colorado to the list last week. I liked what little of Denver I saw. High altitude may not have been the smartest place to break my no-alcohol rule. :(

LoDo is great. They have done a nice job redeveloping the entire area. On that mall drive (16th st) area in downtown, we were walking back to our hotel. There is quite an element out there after dark. We walked past a group of hippies, and one of the guys says to a co-worker, "oohhhhh man, you smell like money."

Yeah, 16th Street reminded me of Madison in good and bad ways. The stretch of California Avenue from 17th to 14th was lousy with homeless people at all hours. They didn't bother me, at least.

sweet beaches, crab shacks and sweet corn. charter fishin.' kind of an odd midwest-meets-the-atlantic-ocean vibe.

I can dig it.

California was already on my list, but I visited Los Angeles ever so briefly this week. Natural beauty with man-made blight. My grandfather once turned down a job there, calling it "Niles with mountains in the background." That still pretty much holds true, as far as I can tell. The weather was perfect, but so much still looked shabby and disreputable. It's the inverse of South Florida, in a sense, where everything beautiful is developed to be that way while the untouched land is bleak and vaguely sinister.
