Was talking to a couple of cops over the weekend that has worked in Roseland (one of the worst areas in the city according to statistics) for 7 years and both swore that it really wasn't bad. I was shocked to hear that. I guess it depends on who you talk to. Neither would ever be mistaken as assholes so that could play a role in their view of the area.

Doubt you saw it from the beginning. My view of the incident changed when I saw it from the beginning.

Unless he murdered her there isn't anything. Timing is everything. If she turns that corner 10 seconds earlier or later we would never know who she was.

I share the same thoughts.

I do believe that he should lose his job though.

Do You Know Why I’m Pulling You Over, Being Wildly Aggressive, And Charging You With Assault Today, Sir?

Image
Officer Daniel McEwen
Greene County Police Department

Good afternoon, sir. Go ahead and roll your window all the way down for me. My name is Officer Daniel McEwen from the Greene County Police Department. Now, do you know why I’m pulling you over today, being overly aggressive, and charging you with a felony count of assaulting a police officer?

I’m going to need to see your driver’s license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance. Thank you, sir. Now, just sit tight in your car while I take a look here and grow increasingly hostile. I’m just going to start addressing you in an unmistakably threatening tone that is specifically meant to intimidate and provoke, and then drastically escalate the situation so that it quickly gets out of hand.

Are you aware of the speed limit on this road, sir? It’s 35. I had you clocked at 52 miles per hour, which is why I had to stop you and exhibit a nakedly confrontational, antagonistic, and condescending attitude, practically daring you to challenge my authority in any way whatsoever. You can’t be driving that fast around here, so I’m going to have to write you a ticket and then violently place you under arrest the moment you do or say anything that isn’t in complete and utter compliance—or which could even be remotely construed as noncompliant—with every single instruction I give to you.

Do you understand all that, sir?

If you have any questions about this ticket, I’d be happy to wildly overreact to anything you say that shows the slightest hint of resentment, annoyance, or resistance. Really, while you have me here, I can easily interpret any snide remark or frustrated comment as a potential threat to my safety—even so much as an angry look—and respond in a disproportionately combative way by erupting in unwarranted rage, taking out either my 50,000-volt Taser or my handgun, and pointing it directly at you through the driver’s side window.

Now, I have to head back to my patrol car real quick, so please bear with me here for a few minutes. Then you can be on your way to jail in no time as soon as I come back and forcibly remove you from your vehicle, slam you into the asphalt, cuff you, and jam my knee into your back as I radio in that I need backup right away because you’re resisting arrest—all the while both outright ignoring your vocalized concerns for your safety and directing my own petty, barbed insults at you. Just so we’re on the same page here, you’ll be getting three points on your license for speeding and also assault charges that carry a minimum sentence of one year in prison, but you’ll be assumed guilty of both while I automatically receive the benefit of the doubt despite any and all evidence to the contrary.

You know what, why don’t you step out of the car, sir? And put that goddamn cell phone away.

RPB with the onion segues is building this thread like the george washington bridge. i really miss the days when that site was just relief humor. now, it's hard to tell whether it's actually satire anymore (not a criticism of the site).

If he overstepped his authority, couldn't he be charged with assault?

I feel ya.

I like it how it is now, but I loved the old Onion, too.

You can't see it. After he slams the handcuffed woman to the ground both cops agreed that she was resisting at that point. What does resisting mean? Possibly taking a step forward or back.

I really don't know how.

Slamming someone to the ground without reason = Assault.

I would presume under the umbrella of civil rights charges (as he is acting under the color of law) you could get to the use of excessive force, unlawful arrest & seizure, possibly open the entire department up to an investigation as to the possible racial profiling/motivations. Given how sloppy(& arrogant) this entire department & officer are coming across, I wouldn't be surprised if there is evidence that evidence was unlawfully concealed/altered/eliminated.

Any cop that quick to pull his taser and threaten to "light up" a motorist he stopped on questionable motives isn't going to have a background that can withstand much scrutiny. The question is how much does AG Lynch & the White House want to deal with.

He either did a u-turn and sped up behind her because she was black or because she had Illinois plates. Not sure if everyone watch the entire video but he lies to his superior about what happened. There's a transcript of it online too.

I think that will be the thread that will lead to all of this unraveling. If there is in fact solid evidence as to this (I can't watch/read much of this stuff anymore) & the Texas AG or local DA are smart, they'll drill him on a quick charge of filing a false report & get out ahead of the potential headaches.

It's not an unlawful arrest unfortunately. And I see her go out of the video capture, so I really can't see if the force was excessive.

The force is open to all the feds want to look at now.

Wisconsin cops have been guilty of this for years. I make sure I'm at least 1 mile under the limit when I cross over the border.

Cops are forced to deal with and diffuse dangerous situations on a daily basis.

Cops are shot killed on the job every year.

Okay ,
He either pulled her over for DWB or for the out of town plates. I lean to the latter as it is a small colledge town.

Watching that video both sides come off as morons. Nas,what basically started the confrontation was she blew smoke in his face,he asked her to put the cig out, she refused then the small town cop mentality kicked in.

I am surprised though she did not act better when confronted with a cop as her kinda lengthily arrest record shows. In fact technically she should not have been legally have been driving. People are citing her self-diagnosing of depression but based on that and her behavior in that video, if they find nothing else in the tox screening(that takes a couple of weeks) I would say she might be Bi-Polar. The way people described her ass she was going down to Texas with the new job and the vid point to a manic phase. Then when she was sitting in that cell, her family and friends not willing to put up the $500 to get her out might have triggered a depression slam and caused the suicide.
I really can't see how she owed the State of Illinois so much in fines and there was no bench warrant out for her. Especially for what they where.

She didn't blow smoke in his face. He told his superior she wouldn't even look at him.

She was an activist. I believe for Black Lives Matter.

Her family was getting ready to send the money. $5k isn't generally something that you're walking around with.

If she took her life there were obviously some issues she was still dealing with. A quick look at her FB page and you wouldn't think she was a person that was battling depression.
