Nope can't even do that. The woman who's kid was killed is now suing 20+ Chicago Police officers for trying to arrest the guy who did a drive by and then jumped the curb and killed her kid.

That's what people do when they can't "grab" their kid back.

She was smoking marijuana in the car before she was pulled over.

I don't know if she should have been stopped or not. But she probably didn't need to receive anything more than a warning to "be careful". Anyone here who would have gotten a ticket in the same situation would have thought the cop was a jag-off.

And then the cop made a big deal because the woman was pissed. He created the situation. He had all the power. He didn't need to argue with her. It's about ego rather than doing the job.

Of course, cop defenders will point out that cops are human. No shit. But the job has certain requirements. There are a lot of dangerous jobs. Cops complain way more than anyone else in a dangerous profession.

Watching the video reminds me of when an umpire gets in the face of a manager. It's completely unnecessary. Walk away. The umpire has all the power. Why does he put himself on the same level as the guy he is policing? It's ego. Same thing here.

exactly. anybody defending the cop here, i'd love to see what they'd do if it were them being pulled over and harassed for the exact same reason. you'd see some long diatribe on "douchebag of the week" (this jagoff cop that pulled me over, what about my rights). but it's some black person, so you know, they got what's coming to them. if it were a black cop, and a white college girl pulled over and same thing happened. yeah i wonder how the public reaction would be.

Sometimes it doesn't seem to be enough for these goofs to just write you a ticket. They want to rub your nose in it. I'm usually pretty polite to cops even if they're assholes because, well, they have all the power- and guns. But I've had similar situation where I was in a mood and the guy was trying to fuck with me and I told him to just write the ticket. Naturally, he got indignant. I defused the situation by saying something like, "This is going to cost me 75 bucks, do you want me to be happy about it? You probably never worry about going ten over the limit, do you?" He really couldn't argue with that. And he wasn't a complete douchebag. But a lot of hammerheads would have gotten angrier. Maybe even tried to gin up some phony reason to detain me.

when i moved here, i found out you had to display 2 plates. where i was coming from, i didn't have to do that...you weren't even given 2 plates i don't think. i didn't realize i even had 2 plates when i got my illinois plates because they were stuck together...but i got pulled over multiple times for not displaying 2 plates (and my car had to have a plateguard installed in the front eventually). the attitude i got from cops was always as if i was driving with their mother strapped on top of the car. like they couldn't believe i wouldn't display 2 plates. but all they did was keep giving me warnings. i never got a ticket for it. i never gave them attitude but the look on my face was more than likely "you haven't got anything better to do right now?"

i don't have a lot of sympathy for traffic cops. i'm sure it's boring and can even be dangerous but i see a lot of people getting pulled over and i don't see any improvement in drivers around me. so they're not really doing much to improve the situation by meeting their quotas.

Probably. That's the only situation where I could see continuing to smoke a cigarette when getting pulled over.

Rogue, has there been any instances of police abuse that you agreed the cops were over the line? Just wondering.

Once the self-driving car becomes ubiquitous these municipalities are going to have to figure out how to fund operations. That's a truly disruptive technology and not that far in the future. I'd say probably twenty years or so. There eventually won't even be traffic cops.

A friend of mine is involved in Mt. Prospect politics. For some reason the Board of Trustees is trying to jam through an initiative to hire cops who aren't U.S. citizens. One of the claims is that there are not enough citizens applying. Yeah, right. Half the world is out of work.

They had a public meeting at which my friend spoke. He's adamantly against a non-citizen police force. He began by taking on the false claim that there aren't enough citizens to be cops. He mentioned that in the very near future the self-driving car will be a reality and the amount of officers required will drop precipitously. One old guy on the Board looked at him like he was talking about something from The Jetsons, gave a smarmy little giggle, and said, "I don't see the future the same way you do."

In my younger days I used to routinely get pulled over by police because some dude with a warrant name was similar to mine. It used to routinely happen to me during my early 20's. The warrant on the guy was from Itasca. I used to be like shit I've never been to Itasca. Didn't matter. Racial profiling probably so. Sometimes they simply get behind the car while I was driving run the plates and pull me over. There would not be any moving violation involved.

It didn't change my outlook on police though. They have a job to do and it's best to be respectful of them. There isn't any upside in arguing with them. During the warrant period they even pulled me out of a motel in Matteson thinking I was the guy. I showed them my i.d. they told me it was fake and hauled me in for processing.
It still doesn't change my outlook.

wouldn't smoking a cigarette be a pretty good way to try and hide the smell of alcohol or pot from emanating from the car? is the police officer's request to extinguish the cigarette really that unusual? refusal to make eye contact? maybe don't want to show those big red eyballs?

At least 20 cops from my high school class of about 300

Also, I went to WIU where Criminal Justice is a big deal.

And on top of that, I like to get to know the cops where I live if possible.
